St. Barnabas
Died: 61
Feast Day: June 11
Patronage: Cyprus, Antioch, against hailstorms and invoked as a peacemaker

Saint Barnabas, born Joseph, from the tribe of Levi in Cyprus, was a follower of Jesus. After Christ’s death, he sold his property and placed the money at the feet of the Apostles. (Acts 4:36-37) His name was then changed to Barnabas, meaning son of encouragement. Barnabas most likely knew Saul, thus he supported and sponsored Saul to the Apostles, after Saul's conversion. The Acts of the Apostles chronicles their travels and apostolate to the Gentiles. At the Council of Jerusalem, they testified on behalf of the Gentiles concerning Jewish rites. St. Luke wrote about Barnabas with esteem. He was martyred in Cyprus and in 448 his body was found incorrupt.

The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Elizabeth
Feast day: May 31 (New) July 2 (Trad)

And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord. And Mary said:

My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him. He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy: As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever. Luke (1:41-55)

Saint Joan of Arc
1412-1431
Feast day: May 30
Patronage: France; martyrs; captives; military personnel; people ridiculed for their piety; prisoners; soldiers

Joan of Arc, a national heroine of France, was born in 1412 during the Hundred Years War. At age 12 she began receiving visions of Saint Michael, as well as other angels and saints, telling her to drive out the English. Possessing remarkable mental and physical courage, Joan led the French army to victory over the British at Orleans when she was 18. Several additional victories led to Charles VII’s coronation. Eventually burned at the stake, she held up a cross calling continually upon the name of Jesus. A retrial declared her innocent in 1456 making her a martyr. Joan of Arc was canonized 500 years later.

Saint Mary Magdalen de Pazzi
166-1607
Feast day: May 25 (New), May 29 (Trad)
Patronage: against bodily ills, against sexual temptation, against sickness, sick people, Naples

Saint Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, called the “ecstatic saint” had many highs and lows in her lifetime. At 16 she entered the Monastery of St. Mary of the Angels, a Carmelite Cloister that received daily communion, unusual for that time. She wanted a hidden life but her ecstasies prohibited that and she humbly accepted it. She received many visions and ecstasies but also desolation, temptations and dryness. Her continuous physical sufferings and severe spiritual trials were a great burden but she was enriched by God with extraordinary graces. Her response to suffering was to show love and gratitude for the gift of suffering.
