Happy last day of Pride Month! 🌈✨

Jen Mazza, the artist new to Ulterior Gallery, will be having her first solo exhibition n January 2025. January symbolizes a new beginning, and we are excited to welcome Mazza to the gallery and to present her new paintings in new year.

This image is an example of one of Mazza's earlier paintings, titled "Red Letter #7" (2007). Mazza painted this series when she created figurative images as her main subject--focusing on bodies and small objects. She explains, "The materiality of the figurative painting crosses over directly into my current practice, and the verb 'q***ring' is one I respond to in terms of 'q***ring the pitch,' trying to embody something in terms of otherness." This depiction of fingers holding open a page in a book has had emotional resonance for many.

More coming up in 2025!

Celebrating the final day of June, Pride Month!

In September, we open our 2024-25 season with Douglas Goldberg's second solo exhibition with the gallery. We are thrilled to introduce a stunning collection of brand-new works!

Douglas Goldberg is a sculptor who carves objects that represent his fears, covered and hidden under the form of a cloth in stone. His identity as a gay man with his personal history, memories, and fears for the future, are all intertwined. The artist sits with and studies the stone for days in order to revealed and concealed elements materialize in his sculptures.

With the closing of Carrie Yamaoka's solo exhibition yesterday, the gallery will be open by appointment only for July and August. For viewing requests or inquiries about works by our gallery artists, please contact [email protected]

“Purple x gray redux” 1997/2022/2024

This a two-part work that can be configured in any number of different ways, depending on the site, though there are certain rules. It was once one integral work which had been damaged and was returned to my studio to see if repair was possible. Repair involved processes that would have taken it into the realm of becoming another work. Time had worked on the fugitive tint I had originally used, turning what was a grayish purple to brown. In 2022, I pulled it apart, like a sandwich splayed open— its components having been impacted by both their joining and their rending.
At Ulterior, the left hand upright panel leans against a corner, and the right hand panel floats on the floor.
JPEGs fail to capture or represent- best to see it in person. Ulterior is open today and the show is up through June 29.

These two pieces, placed in the side room, are similar in form (the painting on the wall is 24 x 24 inches and the complete edge of the blue resin sculpture on the floor is also 24 inches), and respond to each other visually with different textures in this small space.

“I am nature,” said Jackson Po***ck.

But no, that is not quite right, actually we have it from Lee Krasner, who relates the following to interviewer Dorothy Seckler:

“When I brought Hofmann up to meet Po***ck and see his work, Hofmann's reaction was – one of the questions he asked Jackson was, do you work from nature? There were no still lifes around or models around and Jackson’s answer was, “I am nature.” […] Well, with the knowledge that I am nature and try to make something happen on that canvas, now this is [my] real transition that took place.”

I’ve been thinking about how to paint, even just how to see nature without engaging in forms of mastery. I am thinking about ways to acknowledge that landscape painting is and always has been merely an extension of history painting. And yet, as was Krasner at the moment recounted above, I am thinking about myself as the bearer of both nature and culture.

The Waves: There is a dedication page at the beginning of the first modern Atlas by Abraham Ortelius. It is written in Latin. Using the original characters from this page and following the awkward line breaks of the Ortelius original I typeset certain transitional passages from Virginia Woolf’s The Waves.

Portent: Paintings of a certain size are pretenders to the heroic. Resisting either masking my hand or engaging in AbEx “gestural fireworks” (as my former professor Lauren Ewing called them), I am more interested in close attention, labor and materiality.

The exhibition is on view at the James Gallery through June 7, 2024

Thank you all for coming to the Sarah Tortora's exhibition walkthrough yesterday ❤️

Today is the last day to catch Tortora's first solo exhibition with the gallery, "Meridian." Please do not miss... We are open until 6 pm today!

05/09/2024

Tomorrow! Please join Sarah Tortora for an exhibition walk-through tomorrow, Friday, May 10, at 11 am. Coffee and snacks will be served.

The ceramic works mounted on the wall (there are ten pieces installed at the gallery and "Nest", photographed, is one of them) are relatively new medium for Tortora. Their iron content reveals the magnetic field of the earth at the time of firing, further emphasizing the artist’s connection to the ground. These hand-wrought amalgams evoke familiar narratives, yet operate parallel to language, blurring boundaries between physical relationality and perceptual misidentification. Simultaneously, the presence of these works is warm and relational, and the scale of Tortora’s mark-making discloses the physical presence of the human hand.

Carrie Yamaoka's painting, "40 by 30 (clear/black #2)" 2021, is in a group exhibition, "When You See Me: Visibility in Contemporary Art / History", at the Dallas Museum of Art. Now on view and it will be up until April 13, 2025.

"the exhibition showcases numerous recent acquisitions by a diverse, intergenerational group of 50 artists, mostly artists of color, women and q***r artists, whose work contends with visibility both socially and formally. Featuring nearly 60 works in various media, When You See Me broadens and complicates official histories and their corresponding visual strategies to allow for richer representations of those who have been traditionally excluded or erased. Employing a wide range of formal and conceptual devices—from abstraction to figuration, fiction to documentary, and the shades of nuance in between—the featured artists explore invisibility, hypervisibility, the desire to be seen and the right to be private. Many of the works included in When You See Me were acquired through the TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art Fund, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this fall. "

If you are in Dallas or traveling there anytime this year, please check it out!
