Physicians for Reproductive Health

We are a network of doctors across the country, working to improve access to comprehensive reproductive health care.

Physicians for Reproductive Health (PRH), a network of doctors across the country, works to improve access to comprehensive reproductive health care. We do this by mobilizing and educating clinicians, speaking with the media, and advocating with our policy makers to achieve a vision of patient-centered health care that is safe, supported, and accessible.

Dear President Biden 📝

PRH and 430 health care providers sent a letter to the White House this morning calling on bold policy solutions that meet the needs of everyone who needs abortion care and gender affirming care, but especially later abortion patients and young people getting gender care.

If we want to build a new world with new ways, now is the time. We need to move beyond old legal frameworks. We all deserve better.

Breaking News: The Supreme Court dismissed Moyle v. U.S., allowing emergency abortions in Idaho for now. This 6-3 decision provides temporary reprieve but doesn’t resolve the clash between state bans and federal EMTALA directives.

Physicians for Reproductive Health President and CEO, Dr. Jamila Perritt responds:

“Today’s Supreme Court’s decision to allow the lower court’s injunction of Idaho’s law to remain in place while litigation continues is a relief, albeit temporary. While it is devastating that the Supreme Court declined to end this uncertainty, this decision will ensure that for now abortion care can be provided in the case of life-threatening emergencies and will save countless lives. People need abortion care for many reasons, including under emergency circumstances. No matter someone’s reason for their abortion, they should be able to get the care they need in their community.

Read Dr. Perritt’s full statement and learn more about what this means for our community by visiting the link in our bio. Please note that this is not a victory, and that together, we must continue to fight for equitable abortion access.

🚨 Breaking News: The Supreme Court dismissed FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, meaning mifepristone remains available nationwide! 🚨 This landmark decision aligns with medical evidence and supports our communities’ right to full, healthy lives.
This victory, driven by relentless community advocacy, is crucial for Black, Brown, Indigenous, people of color, those experiencing poverty, members of the LGBTQIA2s+ community, and those in rural areas who face the harshest impacts of abortion bans.

PRH President and CEO Dr. Jamila Perritt responds:

“Today we celebrate this meaningful victory thanks to our community’s relentless advocacy. Together, we fought tirelessly to ensure access to mifepristone because of its critical role in reproductive health care and its importance in expanding abortion access for our community members, especially those living at the intersections of systemic oppression disproportionately harmed by abortion bans and restrictions.”

Read Dr. Perritt’s full statement and learn more about what this means for our community in the link in our bio. Together, we continue the fight for comprehensive reproductive health care for all.

There’s another case before SCOTUS that could impact people’s ability to access the health care they need.

Here’s what you need to know about EMTALA and why it’s vital in our fight for abortion access and reproductive justice.

Physicians rely on scientific evidence and medical research to guide their practice, but laws like abortion bans that create confusion or hinder providers’ ability to make informed medical decisions jeopardize patient safety and well-being.

What is abortion care?! We’re here to break it down.
✨✨✨
With so much misinformation and disinformation out there about abortion, as medical experts, we want to share the facts about abortion care.
✨✨✨
There are two main forms of abortion care available to people today: medication abortion and procedural abortion. Both are *super* safe and *super* effective.
✨✨✨
No matter why you might need an abortion, your reason is valid. You deserve to have the support you need to make decisions about your body and your future.

On this day in 1993, Dr. David Gunn was murdered by a white supremacist anti-abortion extremist. Every year, we Appreciation Day as a way of honoring the courageous, compassionate people who provide abortion care.

PRH staff are taking a well-deserved break after another critical year of showing up for our communities in service of autonomy, safety, health, and justice. As global, national, and local challenges continue to play out, it is important to us as an organization to give staff time to connect with their loved ones and recharge.

See you all next year!

From the White House to Congressional hearings, from MSNBC to rallies, for the last four years we’ve had the honor of learning from Dr. Kristyn Brandi’s leadership as our Board Chair.

While her time as Chair has come to an end, we are fortunate to have her as a forever part of our physician advocate community. Dr. Brandi exemplifies fierce advocacy: she takes risks, is kind to everyone she meets, leads with passion and unwavering support, and is deeply dedicated to the support of PRH’s programs, curriculum, fundraising, and community building.

Dr. Brandi, abortion advocacy would be less brighter without you in it!

⚡️NEW: The pill is LIBERATED, y’all!

Earlier this year, physicians (many of them PRH Hotties 💅🏼) and activists testified in front of the FDA advisory committee and the FDA has decided to trust the science - will be available over-the-counter! 🎉🪩

From PRH President and CEO Dr. Jamila Perritt: “Opill is a safe and effective birth control pill that people of all ages should be able to access without the unnecessary barrier and delay of needing a prescription and mandated visits to a provider…While we know that this action will not be a magic bullet or a panacea for fixing access challenges for many communities, it is an important initial action to creating equitable conditions for accessing contraceptive care.”

⚡️ROE V. WADE WAS OVERTURNED A YEAR AGO TODAY:

And about 13,000 people have joined us here on Instagram since then. We’ve spent a year together deep diving into reproductive policy, history, and making fun of anti-abortion extremists - wouldn’t have done it any other way. We’re so thankful for this fun and curious community.

Honestly…anti-abortion extremists probably aren’t giving up on this whole “ban abortion” thing. These abortion bans have caused irreparable harm to communities and families and still, they are trying to ban abortions for all of us.

But we’re never giving up. Ever. Because we know our communities deserve better. Our patients deserve to have abortions with dignity and respect. We’re just going to advocate for abortion even harder. Are you ready?

⚡️JUNETEENTH: Remember that the fight for Reproductive Justice and racial justice are intertwined.

defines Reproductive Justice the right to maintain bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and raise the children we do have in safe, sustainable communities.

Racism strips Black women and birthing people of these rights and has for centuries - that is why we cannot have racial justice without Reproductive Justice. That is why the work of emancipation is not finished until we are free to plan our families in safe communities.

If you are Black, we hope that your Juneteenth is filled with rest and celebration. If you are not, we hope you are taking this time to reflect on centering Black voices, how you’re showing up for Reproductive AND racial justice.

Just like abortion, trans liberation affords people the opportunity to be free, to thrive, to be safe, and to build their dreams. As physicians, we believe our patients when they say they don’t want to be pregnant and we trust our patients to know who they are.

This fight belongs to everyone.

06/09/2023

PRH is proud to be in community with so many amazing organizers and advocates who know that we can’t build a future without centering *all* of our liberation.

Abortion justice is q***r justice is climate justice is reproductive justice is racial justice is housing justice is disability justice is immigrant justice.

We need all of us to build new ways and make dreams of a more caring future possible.

Pride is about just that: celebrating community resilience and being loud about what we need to be healthy and safe.

06/01/2023

Happy . We're celebrating all of the gay, q***r, le***an, bisexual, transgender, asexual, gender fluid people needing comprehensive repro health care. No matter your sexuality or gender you deserve dignity and compassion, and PRH is working to make that a reality.

To our q***r staff, physician advocates, allies, and partners: thank you for you. Even amidst all of these challenging times, you keep bringing your compassionate light to this work.

⚡️Spilling the tea, entering the chat, adding it to the Burn Book.

Today’s Fifth Circuit hearing on mifepristone was ludicrous. Anti-abortion extremists are recycling the same old misinformation and ignoring decades of research and science that point to mifepristone being safe.

We’re watching all the mifepristone updates to see where all this goes and we’ll keep you in the loop. But rest assured that for the moment, mifepristone is just fine in states where abortion is legal.
