“Broadway musicians were victims of a greater number of health and safety issues this past year. Many Local 802 members are justifiably concerned for their personal safety when working in Broadway houses. Some potentially fatal accidents and physical attacks have occurred recently inside and outside of theatres. Producers seem hesitant to take preventive measures until it’s too late,” writes Local 802 member Bud Burridge in the December 2023 issue of Local 802’s magazine. The New York Post also covered the story.

Rest in peace, Local 802 member Lutz Rath (1945-2023)

The Washington Square Music Festival notes with sadness the peaceful death on Nov. 8 of Artistic Director Ludwig (Lutz) Rath 78, conductor and cellist. His unique vision and creativity shaped the programming of WSMF since 2001. Born 1945 in Krefeld, Germany, he immigrated to the US, studying at Indiana Univ. Bloomington School of Music, then made his home in New York City and Sag Harbor. Well known on the local and international music scene, his knowledge of classical, contemporary and world music was exhaustive, which he enthusiastically shared with our audiences. He is survived by his partner Jenna Saint Pierre and countless friends and colleagues.
A memorial date will be announced.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television (AMPTP) have set contract negotiations for theatrical and television film work for January 22-31 (minus weekends) in Los Angeles.

Negotiations for AFM’s Basic Theatrical Motion Picture and Basic Television Motion Picture Agreements will begin later than planned in part due to the AMPTP’s prolonged labor disputes with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, which caused significant disruptions in the entertainment industry.

The current contract was due to expire on November 13, 2023. To ensure the integrity of essential contractual protections until the next agreement is reached and ratified, the current agreements have been extended by six months.

Streaming now dominates the entertainment industry, and “new media” is no longer a new business. The AMPTP has unfairly exploited musicians’ labor and shut musicians out of millions of dollars of streaming profits for over a decade. It’s past time for a fair contract for current and future generations of all musicians.

The AFM is committed to fighting for the rights and well-being of members and improving industry wages, working conditions, and residual payments for made-for-streaming content. The Fair Share for Musicians campaign was created by musicians who record for motion pictures and television shows in preparation for negotiations of the AFM’s Basic Theatrical Motion Picture and Basic Television Motion Picture Agreements.
