To the Editor of the New York Daily News:
On May 23, 2024, your newspaper published an opinion letter from a former officer of Communications Workers of America Local 1109. The letter falsely accused this Local of taking a position regarding the tragedy that is occurring in the Middle East. CWA Local 1109 has taken no position whatsoever regarding that conflict.
We are a labor union. We only take political positions that support working people in their jobs. We want better wages, good benefits and safe working conditions for every person. We do not fly any flags of any sort that relate to any conflict outside our union local. All of my time and that of CWA Local 1109’s officers and staff is directed toward our members and resolving their workplace issues.
I understand and respect the fact that CWA, its members and the members of Local 1109 may hold differing opinions about national and international political issues. In the interest of solidarity, Local 1109 takes no position on these issues. Local 1109, together with CWA, stand ready at all times to represent our members’ interests regardless of their political positions. We have dedicated our lives to labor’s fight.
