The music world and WBGO have lost a great friend. Acclaimed jazz guitarist Russell Malone died Friday, August 23 at the age of 60. Malone played with so many greats like Jimmy Smith, Diana Krall, Ron Carter, Harry Connick Jr, George Benson, Christian McBride, David Sanborn and many others. He also released several solo albums. Russell Malone had a unique combination of talent and personality. He will be greatly missed. Listen to his 2004 conversation on WBGO with legendary announcer Michael Bourne.

Spoken Word artist, poet, curator and jazz fan Taalam Acey - Spoken Word returns to New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) this Saturday, August 24 at 8pm. Acey, who grew up in Newark, chats with WBGO News Director Douglas Doyle about the show that features 12 performers from across the region and the nation. Taalam also talks about his admiration for the late Newark poet and author Amiri Baraka. He's also a huge jazz fan.

Award-winning trumpeter, vocalist and composer Jumaane Smith is out with a new album "Come on Home" on August 16. Smith, who survived a difficult childhood in Seattle, says his music saved his life. Smith spoke with WBGO's Douglas Doyle about his new album and his career that includes collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Michael Bublé. Smith also gives credit to Wynton Marsalis for being a great mentor and helping him come to NYC.
