Spine injuries are very common in surfers, particularly in the lower back. This is due to the extended or arched position when paddling on the board, which causes overuse and stiffness in many of the muscles around the spine. 

Knee injuries are also very common, particularly to the inside of the knee, or the ‘medial’ aspect, which occurs due to compression from a wave, or having a leg slip off the board and one leg remain on the board.

Ankle injuries are also quite prevalent due to surfers performing aerial maneuvers and landing awkwardly. High ankle or ‘syndesmosis’ sprains, where the foot is forced upwards towards the shin, are also common.

Injuries at the pro level are typically more severe, simply because surfers are breaking bigger waves than those who are just starting out.

There are three bones that connect and come together at the elbow joint, called the condyle. The area around this connection of bones is called the epicondyle. A common elbow problem occurs when inflammation starts, which is called epicondylitis. Attached at the condyles are tendons of muscles, where people commonly experience pain due to flexor or extensor tendonitis causing inflammation. Typically, when there is an issue with inflammation of these tendons and the tendon does not heal, it will flip over into “tendonosis,” which is a non-healing condition of the tendon. This means that it's not inflamed anymore, but is also not trying to heal—or rather, the collagen fibers are not repairing faster than they are breaking down, so it is considered a degenerative condition.

Depending on a patient’s specific condition, Dr. Sonny Rubin of Newport Regenerative Medicine typically uses Prolotherapy, PRP Therapy or Stem Cell-based therapies to help heal this area.

The causes behind each person's hair loss story varies. Many have experienced shedding as a lingering side effect of COVID-19.

Hair fallout is triggered as a result of sudden shock to a body function. It can be stress induced, hormonally, mentally, nutritionally, or physically induced. Hair loss is when "something stops hair from growing," according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association. It can be hereditary, or an immune system overreaction, among other causes.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) Therapy is an exciting in-office procedure, as it allows doctors to inject PRP into an injured area, stimulating our own body’s ability to heal itself. PRP has a great concentration of growth factors that can help the body repair itself in a targeted area, including growing back thinning hair.

Prolotherapy works by causing a temporary, low grade inflammation at the injection site, activating fibroblasts to the area, which, in turn, synthesize precursors to mature collagen and thus reinforce connective tissue. In other words, it can stimulate your body to heal itself.

Prolotherapy, short for “proliferation therapy,” is also known as nonsurgical ligament and tendon reconstruction, or regenerative injection therapy. It works by stimulating the body’s own natural healing mechanisms to repair injured musculoskeletal tissue. This treatment works best to repair weak or painful joint areas.

Prolotherapy is used for musculoskeletal pain or injury which is either unresolved after 8 weeks, or where enhanced healing is desired. It works by raising growth factor levels to promote tissue repair. It can even be used years after the initial pain or problem began. Because Prolotherapy works to repair weak and painful joint areas, it is a long-term solution rather than a temporary measure, like prescription drugs or Cortisone injections.
