What’s valid to me is that the initial idea usually is not the idea it eventually becomes. You have to look at it from all angles—ask why it won’t work—and refine it before you push it out of the nest. Only then can you let it fly.

The world is open to the next new thing right now—desperately seeking it in fact. If you have business ideas that are keeping you up at night, consider yourself a visionary.

Every day I’m hearing about people who are flourishing in this crazy environment. And believe me, these are people who are not sitting around asking “who moved my cheese?” They are jumping in and meeting this moment. You think about it in the shower. It pokes you when you’re walking the dog. It won’t leave you alone. Sometimes—you even dream about it. And after a while you start realizing that this could be an amazing idea. A world-changing, paradigm-busting, unicorn. And it’s just pinballing its way around your brain. You are at a critical moment, my friend. You have to choose to find reasons why your idea won’t work, to convince yourself that someone must have done that before, or it’s too hard to execute or “where would I get funding?“ But no hurry—if you wait long enough your passion will just flame out all by itself. And you’ll be standing in the shower with nothing but the soap.

Or you could choose to pull up your big boy or girl pants and strike while you can. Because that idea has been driving you crazy for a reason. So step off the cliff, will you? What is the worst that could happen?

When Einstein came up with his Theory of Relativity in the early 1900’s, he upended hundreds of years of scientific thought. But he realized six years after publishing it, that he had it WRONG. He fixed it and changed the world by giving us a new understanding of space and time.
It’s an old cliche that you learn more from your failures than your successes. But I believe it’s more like this: Your failures LEAD directly to your successes. Today, in development, we call that “test and iterate.” And it’s regraded as part of the journey. There’s no shame in watching your idea not blossom like you originally thought it could. But it’s sad to not leverage that failure into your next big win.

Take at least one step toward your big win today. And don’t worry if you stub your toe on the way. You’re just like Einstein.

Right now, the world is virtually seething with ideas. Plans of reinvention, schemes to help others, ideas so brain blowing that they shove fear right out of their way.
Feel the urgency to create—if you are anxious, it’s because you know this hour will not last.

Believe that you are powerful and prepared and perfectly equipped to meet this moment.

The time has come.

So true . The ideas that fire us up the most, often don’t come to life. Looking back on when that’s happened to me, it’s always been about not properly anticipating resistance and other headwinds that have to be dealt with. In other words, ex*****on. Just because we are head over heels over an idea doesn’t mean the rest of the world will jump right on board with us.

Right now, we are in a great moment—starting any second—when things will change. Opportunities will be created and paradigms will shift. If you want your idea to alter the course of the world, remember this—Ideas come in a flash, while ex*****on is where the worthwhile work happens. Be ready for that and know that making the dream come true is sometimes not all that dreamy.

If you have an idea that you believe can truly change the world, you owe it to the world to preserve. It’s easier to bail at the first signs of resistance. But looking back on my life, the biggest wins are ideas that were met with either a puzzled look or outright rejection. Push through that.

Today we celebrate those who strike out after the big, crazy, ridiculous, new idea that everyone tells them can't be done. Two things we've learned over several decades spent in the shifting sands of marketing and advertising: The person who suggests the new thing, unless he or she is the CEO, is normally looked upon with skepticism. At best. Big ideas can come from anywhere--from a customer comment to an off-hand hallway comment, to our favorite-a contemplative moment in the shower. (These are ALWAYS good.) Not every new idea works, but those that succeed, in retrospect look completely and utterly obvious. So this week, when you hear a new idea that makes you uncomfortable or even slightly afraid, fight your normal reaction to dismiss or run out of the room. Try this: "That's interesting. Tell me why you think that." or "Show me why you think it will work." Anything to avoid dousing the fire of innovation. The company you grow may be your own. .

Our friends at Save Mart are celebrating the Grand Opening of their new flagship store in their hometown of Modesto.
