ππ As we near the end of Planet Protectors week at ENC Nature Camp, our director Bo treated our campers to a special reading of one of his favorite books, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, using all of his funniest voices! π
The Lorax is a perfect book for this week as it beautifully illustrates the importance of taking care of our planet and the impact of environmental conservation, echoing the values we're teaching at camp. π³π
We just love reading stories at Camp and encouraging literacy. Nothing brings a story to life quite like a good book and a lot of enthusiasm! πβ¨
πΏ The ENC always asks vendors to eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging or replace it with more sustainable materials whenever possible. To help celebrate , we want to share the wonderful response from a recent vendor who sells us fair trade items for our gift shops:
βThanks for reaching out! I'm glad to hear that our products have been well received. I'm thrilled to hear about your commitment to sustainability, and I understand the importance. I believe we can accommodate your request, I'll ensure that your products are not shipped with plastic wrapping. Thank you for your support.β
It doesnβt hurt to ask! ππ

Check out this blog article about Mel Letterman, a recent addition to the OC California Native Plant Society board. When asked how they became interested in native plants, Mel replied, "...My first memory of native plants is probably from a visit to the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach. That was where I learned about Poison Oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum), and I still remember being amazed that this plant grew so near my house." https://ow.ly/RFyc50Sz5YE

We had a fun week three at Tucker Camp! We focused on local habitats and studied food chains in Oak Woodlands and Chaparral. We got to keep an eye on a huge number of tadpoles in our stream and met a toad. We made a nature flag for Independence Day, we saw a speckled rattlesnake in the wild, and met one of our snake animal ambassadors. We still have some space in a few weeks for camp. Keep an eye on our webpage, encenter.org or our instagram at environmentalnaturecenter for more events coming up.
Hope to see you back at the ENC soon!
This summer our Naturalists created "Animal Ambassador Mailboxes" so Campers could write letters to ENC animals such as Waffle the tortoise and Pickles the toad. This is just one of the activities making this summer magical, all while promoting and enhancing literacy!
