Happy Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day and historically known as Jubilee Day, Black Independence Day, and Emancipation Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of African American slaves.
It is also often observed for celebrating African American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1866. The day was recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Juneteenth's commemoration is on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.

Newport News, VA – Join the Coalition of Community Change Agents for Collective Impact: A group of Hampton and Newport Community Leaders for a " Juneteenth Walk for Justice March and Rally" for a peaceful March for Justice in response to the killing of George Floyd and systemic racism impacting the black community. The March begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at the Newport News Police Department located at 9710 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News, Virginia and ends at The Plaza at Newmarket, 124 Newmarket Square, in the Shopping Center of the Dump Furniture Store & The Alley at Newmarket in Newport News.
In recent weeks, we have seen many protests in cities all over America, as a result of the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd - just to name a few. The Hampton Roads community stands in solidarity with those who are demanding justice for the senseless killings of black people by law enforcement. The Walk for Justice will be held during Juneteenth weekend, commemorating the end of captivity of black people in America, a significant moment in history. However, 155 years later, black people are still fighting for equity and justice.
The CCACI invites EVERYONE to join us on Saturday June 20, 2020, in recognition of Juneteenth and our collective demand for justice and police reform. This will be a purposeful protest that will include information around Voter Registration, 2020 Census, Law Enforcement Accountability and Community Unification.
JUNETEENTH WALK FOR JUSTICE OUTCOMES AND TAKEAWAYS:
· Use our voices to amplify the message that "Black Lives Matter"
· Show collaboration and unification among community leaders and community members
· Give clear community engagement steps of how to become a community change agent
· Host a voter registration drive
· Spotlight grassroots and community organization resources
· Share opportunities for policy reform and call to action
The event is open to the public and is family friendly. It is recommended to dress casually, wear masks, bring your sign, and positive energy to continue this journey of the Movement!!!
