As the weather continues to heat up, here are some tips to keep your pets cool this summer:

- Never leave your pets in a hot car, not even for a minute, not even with the air conditioner running.

- Keep an eye on the humidity - animals pant to help reduce their body heat, but high humidity conditions hamper that process and their ability to cool themselves and their body temperature can skyrocket.

- Limit exercise on hot days. Adjust intensity and duration of exercise in accordance with the temperature. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours, and be especially careful with pet with white colored ears who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short nosed pets, who typically have difficulty breathing. Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible. Always carry water with you to keep your dog from dehydrating.

- Don't rely on a fan. Pets respond differently to heat than humans do and fans don't cool off pets as effectively as they do people.

- Provide ample shade and water. Any time your pet is outside, make sure they have protection from heat and sun, and plenty of fresh, cold water. In heat waves, add ice to water when possible.

- Watch for signs of heatstroke. Extreme temperatures can cause heatstroke. Some signs include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure, and unconsciousness.

A few weeks ago, the Animal Welfare Division, alongside our valiant allies from the Police and Fire Departments, embarked on a covert operation now dubbed “The Great Wall of Kittens Rescue.” This high-stakes mission involved a series of tactical maneuvers to extricate six (initially believed to be two) fugitive felines from the inner confines of a residential wall. (You can read the official incident report down below)

Following their successful extraction, Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter, recognized their potential and placed the kittens under the secret tutelage of Marge Hackett, feline handler extraordinaire. Under her meticulous guidance, each kitten underwent an intensive "agent training" program, mastering skills ranging from advanced cuddle tactics to stealth pouncing.

These agents are currently stationed at No More Chasin' Tail, eagerly awaiting deployment to their new homes. Thanks to Marge’s unparalleled training, they are well-prepared for their life missions as companions.

Interested parties are encouraged to apply promptly as these operatives are highly sought after for their specialized skills and elite training. For adoption procedures or to learn more about how you can recruit one of these trained feline agents into your home, please contact Marge Hackett

On 22 May 2024 at approximately 1600 hours, the Newport News Animal Welfare Division responded to a call concerning a canine lodged in a tree. The dog, identified as "Tator", a large Blue Tick Hound, was located about 20 feet up in the branches. It appears that Tator, in an ambitious chase after a cat, escalated his pursuit to new heights, quite literally.

Recognizing the gravity (and the height) of the situation, assistance from the Newport News Fire Department was requested. Firefighters from station 2 arrived on scene, deployed a ladder to reach Tator, and carefully brought him down to terra firma.

Tator was evaluated on-site and showed no signs of injury, though he appeared exceptionally proud of his unintended tree-climbing feat.

Boris the cat was also unharmed, and enjoyed sitting just out of Tator's reach on the same branch he (Tator) was stuck on.

Today, the Fire Department learned that dogs can climb up trees, Tator learned he can't climb down trees, and the Animal Welfare Division learned what happens when you say the word "quiet" out loud.

Thank you again, Newport News Fire Department!

The Newport News Animal Welfare Division wishes to extend our sincerest gratitude to the Newport News Fire Department and the Newport News Police Department for their extraordinary efforts while assisting on an unplanned rescue operation.

At approximately 2330 hours, the AWD was dispatched to a residential location following a report of two kittens trapped within the structural confines of a wall.

Upon arrival, officers from the Newport News Police Department were already on scene, providing moral and tactical support (because every good operation needs a strong back up), while participating in what would soon become an exemplary display of inter-agency cooperation.

The initial strategy involved non-invasive extraction methods, employing a culinary lure (cat food) attached to a textile device (an old towel). This inventive yet unorthodox technique resulted in the capture of the first kitten, and approximately 30 minutes later, the second one. During the extrication of the second kitten, an additional furry fugitive was discovered in a more precarious location within the structure.

Efforts to access the additional kitten without restorative demolitions (and a phone call to the boss at 0230 hours) were unsuccessful, prompting a strategic collaboration with the Newport News Fire Department. Once on scene, they scanned the perimeter and located a secondary feline-access point. Utilizing advanced thermal imaging technology, firefighters identified the heat signatures of not one, but three additional kittens. These subjects were tactically lured to the exit with the aid of a low-tech device (laser pointer) further proving that old tech and new tech make an unbeatable team.

Officers from South Watch 3 Bravo provided essential care, gradually acclimatizing the kittens from a high temperature environment to a normal one to prevent shock. And because no one likes a cold kitten.

The operation continued with commendable patience and precision, resulting in a 6th and final kitten being safely removed.

The “subjects”, now affectionately known as “Fire”, “Quiet Night”, “Whiskey”, “Tango”, “Foxtrot” and “Sergeant P” were transported to the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter, where they traded their 110 degree, dangerous crawl space digs for warm beds, clean water and plenty of food.

This incident highlights the challenges and unpredictability of animal rescue operations, as well as the remarkable adaptability and resourcefulness of responding units. It also underscores the potential for a single rescue mission to multiply, both in complexity and in kitten count.

Thank you again for all your help!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
10/10. Would definitely herd cats with both divisions again.

Meet, "JJ!" Today's very lucky kitten!

Earlier today (11/14/23), the Newport News Animal Welfare Division was called to Empire Builder on Warwick Blvd. for a report of a kitten that had found itself at the bottom of a well. Working together, the employees of and Animal Welfare Officer Mroczkowski, were able to successfully rescue "JJ" from the hole. Thankfully, he was not injured and is now being well cared for.

And as a PSA - it's always a good idea to cover open ground holes so that curious kittens like "JJ" won't go tumbling down them.

Coexisting with urban wildlife can be uncomfortable at times, and conflicts are sometimes inevitable. Consider these few small changes to make it easier to live with your wild neighbors, such as:

✔ Removing leftover food sources like pet food bowls, or food residue from grills, and securing your birdfeeders so only birds can access them
✔ Securing your outdoor trash can lids
✔ Keeping wild animals from accessing the fruits and vegetables in your garden
✔ Checking for holes around your home’s exterior and sealing any that you find
✔ Regularly trimming your lawn and thick bushes
✔ Taking wildlife pictures from afar; giving them plenty of space
✔ Never intentionally getting too close, capturing, or handling a wild animal

The most important thing you can do living around wild animals is to LEAVE THEM ALONE. If you are unsure if an animal is healthy or otherwise in need of assistance, you should ALWAYS consult your local wildlife professional before taking any action.

Note: In Virginia, it is illegal for anyone without a proper state permit to keep, treat, raise, feed, or otherwise rehabilitate any wild animal.

It takes a village! The Adventures of Ledge Cat.

On 19 July 2023, Newport News Animal Welfare Division received a call from a concerned citizen in reference to a kitten on the interstate. Our dispatchers quickly gathered detailed specifics on the kittens’ exact location and started Virginia State Police en route. As it would turn out, the kitty was not actually on the interstate- she was on the ledge of the cement column that holds up the interstate over pass.

“I’m gonna need fire” was the text message I sent to Dispatchers Flora Soule and Katy Thomason. Thomason contacted the Fire Department and 15 minutes later, Ladder 7 arrived. Lieutenant Pat Primeaux, Master Firefighter Matt Wallner and Firefight Jake Nadeau sprang into action. Dressed with cat gloves and carrying a transfer cage, they climbed up the ladder towards the kitten who was patiently waiting to be rescued. She ran back towards the end of the pillar as they got closer, but when LT Primeaux reached his hand out to pet her, she came to him and head bumped his hand. It was at this point that I was able to see that she had a collar on and had gotten her front leg stuck through it. LT Primeaux picked her up, placed her in the transfer cage and carried her down.

But the journey didn’t end there!

The non-breakaway collar that Ledge Cat was wearing had embedded itself into the underside of her leg, leaving a very large, very infected laceration. She had several burn marks on her feet and a few cuts on various parts of her body. On top of that- Ledge Cat was severely emaciated, weighing a little over 3lbs and very dehydrated. She was taken immediately to Peninsula Animal Referral Center where Dr. Rachel Gunther and her team of amazing vet care staff got to work on assessing the severity of her injuries. It was decided that suturing the wound was going to be the best option and they stayed hours past closing to ensure that Ledge Cats’ surgery was performed that evening. After surgery, Ledge Cat came home with me for the night and enjoyed her first meal in who knows how long.

This afternoon Ledge Cat was brought into Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter to be seen by the shelters' veterinarian, Dr. Sara Ray. After stopping into the office so she could say a quick hello to Superintendent Gilbert, Office Tech Barnes and Officers’ Adorno, Burns and McCarthy, and the shelters’ Superintendent Burnup, Ledge Cat waited her turn to be seen by Dr. Ray. Amber, the shelters’ foster coordinator worked diligently to get Ledge Cats’ new foster into the system so that she could go home this evening. And at around 1800 hours that’s exactly where Ledge Cats’ new foster, Dispatcher Soule, took her.

We’ll never know how Ledge Cat got on the ledge in the first place, but thanks to Newport News Fire Department, Newport News Emergency Communications Center, Peninsula Animal Referral Center, and Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter - that part of her life is in the rear view.

Stay tuned for updates on Ledge Cat. Hopefully by then, we’ll have picked out a better name. Thank you to every single person that assisted in this conquest- it really took a village.
And as always, please remember to spay and neuter your pets.
