Feeling drained while driving? Please pull over and rest!
Look closely at the stickers on the side of your child’s car seat. Do you spot a lower anchor weight limit? Your car seat will tell you to discontinue using the lower anchors at a certain weight, but don’t worry. You can still install your child’s seat with the vehicle seat belt. Read your manual to find out the specifics for your seat, and if your child is forward-facing, don’t forget the tether!

When in doubt, call the car seat or booster seat manufacturer with your questions. Some manufacturers maintain a Frequently Asked Questions section online with helpful information in addition to the car seat instruction manual.

Keep your big kid safe! Make sure you don’t transition to a booster seat too early. To safely use a booster seat, your child needs to meet the height, weight and age requirements set by the booster seat manufacturer. But in addition to that, they need the maturity to sit correctly in the booster seat on every ride. If your child is big enough and old enough for a booster but can’t sit correctly, a car seat with a harness is the safest choice.

The "BRR" months are here! 🥶 It's time to keep kids safe and warm in their car seats. Blankets are a good alternative to a heavy, puffy coat, which can cause the car seat harness to not fit snugly.

Bulky clothing, like winter coats, should be removed before putting a child in the car seat. If it’s extra cold, a blanket can be placed over the child and harness. Our Story
Car Safety Now (www.carsafetynow.org) promotes motor vehicle safety by offering three FREE, theory-driven, evidence based programs for improving car safety among school-age children and teens. The programs were designed with input from teachers, safety experts, researchers, and children to create the most effective and motivating interventions. The materials are research supported to inform and motivate behavior change, and are designed for easy dissemination and replication in a variety of settings. Each program is conveniently packaged in a free downloadable toolkit for use in your car safety education efforts.
1. Make It Click: Participative Education for Tweens
The Make it Click program incorporates competition and creativity to engage 8- to 12-year-old children (“tweens”) in learning about car safety, promoting occupant protection among their peers, implementing restraint-use interventions, and observing peer belt use. Rather than a lecture approach, the target population participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the program. The free, research-supported toolkit available on this site provides a menu of activities for both school and community settings.
2. Boost ‘em in the Back Seat: Video Intervention for Parents
The Boost ‘em in the Back Seat video intervention program is designed for parents of booster-age children (approximately 5 to 10+ years of age). The aim is to convey the power of crash forces, raise perceived threat, dispel barriers and myths, and motivate booster seat use for older children. The research-supported program available on this site includes a free 4-minute video about the danger of prematurely transitioning to an adult seat belt, as well as many other free downloadable materials including posters and 30-second video shorts.
3. In Control: Beyond Distraction: Participative Education for Teens
The In Control: Beyond Distraction program is a respect-based multi-component program for teens that uses humor and principles of behavioral psychology to motivate car safety. The goal is to promote the norm to be in control when behind the wheel, and key messages depict the phone as a source of control over the teens. The research-supported program includes a series of posters designed to appeal to teens, social media discussion topics, contests encouraging creativity, and more. The free downloadable toolkit available on this site provides a menu of activities for traffic safety education in school and community settings.
