This week we’re talking about festival quilts!
Did you know that for 41 of Kentuck’s 53 year history Hallie O’Kelley, renowned screen printer and fiber artist, has created a new quilt that embodies the “theme” of each festival.
This year's quilt is titled “It’s a Puzzle.”
Each quilt begins as a blank piece of white fabric and is dyed, hand stitched and screen printed into a brilliant design. Together, these quilts weave together a visual representation of the rich history of the Kentuck Festival of the Arts.
You might notice that the designs in Hallie’s festival quilts appear on collectible festival items such as posters, postcards, guides, and even t-shirts! You can learn more about Hallie’s festival quilts here: https://buff.ly/3LYLTbJ
The 53rd Kentuck Festival of the Arts is on October 19-20th in Snow Hinton Park. Learn more about the festival and purchase tickets here: https://buff.ly/3LYM079

Happy ! This week we're talking about a group of Guest Artists at the Kentuck Festival of the Arts -- Gee's Bend Quilters!
Gee’s Bend is a small, isolated town in southwest Alabama known internationally for their incredible patchwork creations and their role in the Civil Rights Movement. The quilting tradition dates back to the 19th century and continues today.
For generations, the women of Gee’s Bend have transformed work clothes and fabric remnants into unique and distinctive quilts. The style that can be seen throughout the work of Gee’s Bend Quilters is noted for its lively improvisations and geometric simplicity.
The quilts, hailed by the New York Times as “some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced,” thus serve as a means of cultural preservation and monuments to the women that craft them.
Several quilts by Gee's Bend Quilters are on display in "Stitching Stories," an exhibition on view in Kentuck's Museum and Teer Galleries until July 28, 2024.

Meet Ana Schuber!
Ana has been a crafter since the age of four, but it wasn’t until her daughter was born that she decided that she wanted to learn how to quilt.
Ana attributes this decision to a fond memory of pointing to the squares on her grandmother’s quilt and her grandmother telling her “oh that was your grandfather’s work shirt,” or “that was your mother’s prom dress.”
A position at the University of Alabama brought Ana to Tuscaloosa. She became involved with the West Alabama Quilters Guild, which she is still a member of today.
She says that it wasn’t until she met the Gee’s Bend quilters, that Mrs. Bennett talked to her about “just doing the quilt and not following a pattern.” Ana says that during her conversation with Mrs. Bennett, she pointed to a gorgeous piece of fabric and asked where it came from. Mrs. Bennett replied, “oh i was wearing that one honey, I looked down and it said to me I want to be in the quilt.”
The conversation Ana had with Mrs. Bennett had a major impact on Ana’s artistic style. Ana says, “it was from that moment forward that I started allowing the quilts to tell me what they want to be.”
Ana’s “Home ala Tornado,” and “Dryad” are on view in “Stitching Stories,” the exhibition currently on display in Kentuck’s Museum & Teer Galleries through July 28, 2024.
The quilters featured in “Stitching Stories” create with different goals, techniques, and styles, however, each quilt tells a unique story and contributes to the rich artistic history of Alabama.
The exhibition features the works of Ana Schuber, Sarah Marshall, The March Quilts, Paula Barnett, Nanette Glaus, Mary Burke, Hallie H. O’Kelley, Gee’s Bend Quilters, Rene Kastinas, and Martha Beadle.
