Revocation of Civil Service for the Norton Fire Department
Several residents have reached out to the Norton Fire Department about the wording for question 2 on the ballot for the July 13th election.
Whether you vote yes or no it is important that you understand the wording in the question.
Hopefully this explanation below will help those of you that have asked. If you have any further questions please reach out to the Town Clerk and Lucia will be able to explain it further.
Shall the town of Norton revoke its acceptance of G.L c.31, the Civil Service Law, for all positions in the Fire Department?
A “yes” vote would remove the Fire Department from the civil service and provide local control over personnel recruitment and promotion; current members of the Fire Department will remain covered by the Civil Service statute in their current rank (until they are promoted).
A “no” vote would result in no change to the Fire Department’s civil service status, and personnel recruitment and promotion would remain under state regulation and control.
