An end of an era for the Norwell Recreation Department! Judy Volpe is retiring after 26 years as the Recreation Department's Program Coordinator. Judy Volpe has helped grow the Norwell Recreation Department to become a trusted, valued, and vital community service provider of social and recreational programs and events for all ages. In 2023, over 6000 participants participated in approximately 375 sessions of activities. None of which would be possible without Judy. She is a highly organized master of tasks responsible for the coordination of these programs including scheduling, supplying, staffing, marketing, registration, internal and external customer service, and front line duties while managing daily office responsibilities. Her institutional knowledge and relationships she has built will be impossible to duplicate and she will be sorely missed. That being said we wish her the best in embarking on this next chapter as she looks forward to further adventures with her husband, family, friends and pup Ziggy! We hope she is able to enjoy Norwell Recreation Department programs like Pickleball and Yoga as a participant! Judy was recognized by Town Hall Staff, and representatives from the Select Board and State Senator Patrick O'Connor yesterday! THANK YOU JUDY!

The Norwell Recreation Fishing Derby was held at Jacobs Pond on Saturday, May 11, 2024. A total of 233 anglers of all ages plus family members participated in this Multi-Generational Norwell Family Tradition. Though the weather was not as warm as 2023, the cloud cover and less windy conditions allowed for double the fish caught in 2024. A total of 66 bass, pickerel, bluegills, perch, and sunfish were measured by Norwell Recreation Superintendent, George Grey at the O-FISH-AL Measuring Station. Overall Grand Prize for Longest Fish went to Norwell 2nd Grader Fin Jones for reeling in a beast 20 ¾ inch bass from the Jacobs Pond Dock. Adam Crohan, a Norwell 2nd Grader, brought in a monster 4 ¾” perch to take home the “Minnow Award” for smallest fish caught. All participants went home with either a cool “Norwell Rec Fishing Derby” wristband, plus sunglasses, sunscreen, and drawstring bags. Participants that caught a fish also went home with a free ice cream coupon from Norwell General Store! The event was led by the Norwell Recreation Commission: Alethea Wait, Christine White, Patrick Kelly, Dustin Reardon, and Christopher Madden. The Norwell Recreation Department sends special thanks to Bond Printing and Marketing and Belsan Bait and Tackle for their in-kind support of the event and contributing sponsors: Coastal Heritage Bank & UCC Norwell. The continued success of this annual event can also be attributed to assistance from the Town’s Board of Health, Highway Department, Fire Department, Police Department and Conservation Commission. Participants who did not pick up their raffle prizes or awards will be contacted and can pick-up their plaque or prizes at the Norwell Recreation Department Office at 345 Main St. during normal Town Hall business hours!
