Relay For Life 2024: Let's Rally 04/14/2024

Although each Relay For Life event embraces the uniqueness of the home community, every event does have the same four signature elements: a celebration of cancer survivors, a celebration of caregivers, a luminaria ceremony to honor and remember loved ones, and the opportunity to fight back against cancer.

February is the time of year to celebrate your loved ones. Put your love into action. Make cancer screening a regular part of your life. Screening tests are used before a person has any symptoms to help find cancer early, when it may be easier to treat. cancer.org/getscreened

Per our Mission Moment last night….check this out!

A beautiful open letter from Road To Recovery volunteer driver, Sal:

To Future Road To Recovery Drivers:

If you are looking for an opportunity to help others with a real purpose, Road To Recovery is the answer. I have volunteered for many worthwhile organizations but to be honest, if I wasn’t present on the day of volunteering, the "show would go on without me." This is where Road To Recover is unique and so worthwhile. You, the driver, are so instrumental in helping a patient get to an important appointment and back home. The patient is on a rigorous schedule with few exceptions. You, the driver, are an important piece of the puzzle to assist the patient in their battle to recovery.

I met Karen, a cancer patient, in the summer of 2022. She and I quickly became riding buddies during her many hospital visits. We talked about everything and nothing. Being part of Karen’s journey was so important to me. On December 22, 2022, I received an awesome Christmas gift. Karen told my wife and me the beautiful and joyful news that her doctor told her yesterday: she was now cancer free. Karen thanked me for my part in her difficult recovery. I thanked Karen for being such an inspiration to me. I call my rides with my patients going to church: if you want to feel good, "Go to Church!"

Sincerely,
Sal Montuori

Our fundraising dollars at work!

What causes cancer disparities between people of different racial and income groups? How can we decrease these gaps? We’re determined to answer these questions and more by funding 65 grants totaling $62M to support research into health disparities.

"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior and his legacy of championing justice and equality.

As part of our efforts to achieve health equity, the American Cancer Society has invested $16 million in grants to Historically Black Colleges and Universities as well as Minority-serving institutions to impact future workplace diversity, and we have trained more than 2000 health equity ambassadors that have reached more than 485K people in Black communities with cancer prevention and early detection education. Our new IMPACT initiative will address the challenges we see with prostate cancer, and specifically the disparities that exist for Black men.

The American Cancer Society believes that all people should have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive cancer.

There is a Discovery Shop opening in a few months in Novato! This is a great way to support ACS - volunteer opportunities in the store and/or donating gently used items. Proceeds from the sale of merchandise goes to ACS to help fund all our programs, services and research.

We're looking for American Cancer Society Discovery Shop Enterprise volunteers! https://bddy.me/3ODLpae There are opportunities at many stores within the state. With shops staffed largely by volunteers, funds raised go even further to help American Cancer Society improve the lives of cancer patients and their loved ones. https://volunteercommunity.cancer.org/s/global-search/discovery%20shop?language=en_US
