Open Dive Sites
Hi, I'm Andrew Middleton, a co-creator and admin for http://opendivesites.org, a wiki resource for scuba divers.
I also make maps for sale by print or as digital downloads to take on the go.
It's here! Look for it this week at Aquarius Dive Shop, Monterey Bay Scuba, Pacific Scuba Divers, Diver Dan's and Marin Diving Center. The new issue has new text, revised Field Guide and a special page for diving with sea otters.
Diving Monterey Atlas by Andrew Middleton — The Map Center The definitive guide to enjoying the Monterey Peninsula under the waves. Snorkelers, free divers and scuba divers alike will find full page, full color maps of all the best dive sites with text descriptions, parking information and field guide. First released in 2021 and reprinted three times since,
750 copies sold and this is all that's left unclaimed. I'd love to get the last couple of batches into the hands of some new shops- hit me up of if you have any leads. I'll probably do a second printing in December so let me know if I missed or need to update anything before I go back to the printers.
Thanks everyone for your enthusiasm- it's been so much fun to do all this with you all. Drop a comment if you used any of these maps to go someplace new or see something you otherwise would have missed!
New poster of La Jolla and Scripps Canyon
La Jolla Cove and Scripps Canyon by ecoandrewtrc | Redbubble Scripps Canyon is one of the most studied marine canyons in the world, owing to proximity to the eponymous oceanographic institute. But before the canyon was mapped with sonar, La Jolla Cove was already a diving destination. Modern diving began here and th

January’s speaker: Andrew Middleton - Mapping Monterey. 7pm Friday via Zoom. Andrew has been making maps of the seafloor around Monterey since 2016 and he released his first atlas this year. So how do cartographers like Andrew make maps in the 21st century and why is it so difficult on Earth's last frontier? Andrew will talk about the history of marine geography, transoceanic cables, tectonic plates and the cutting edge of satellites and remote sensing that help us explore in new, drier ways. Andrew Middleton is a cartographer and Geospatial Information Systems specialist with ten years of experience making maps. He's also an Advanced Open Water and former Reefcheck diver who is thoroughly in love with diving in Monterey. Self publishing "Diving Monterey: an Atlas" was only a matter of time.
When he's not making maps or teaching GIS, he flies kites, writes and cohosts the podcast Measure for Measure. He lives in Oakland.
Santa Cruz Natural History Museum gift shop now has Diving Monterey! They're the first retail outlet to stock it that isn't a dive shop.
At Pacific Ocean Water Sports we are known for our innovation in diving, testing and promoting new products that hit our SCUBA market every year.
This month we are featuring the latest Monterey Bay SCUBA diving guide created and produced by local cartographist Andrew Middleton (in the picture).
The guides sold very well over Christmas!
So many times we have heard "we are tired of diving the same dive site" or "we wish we knew other good dive spots"....well, wish no more!
This guide features the main dive sites in Monterey Bay, from Del Monte Beach down to Point Lobos, with great graphics and mapping of the entrances and exits to conduct shore diving in our area.
There are a few guides left and we will be open Friday 12/30/22 from 11am to 7pm and Saturday 12/31/22 from 11am until 5pm, closed on 1/1/2023 and open again on 1/2/2023.
Come get yours before the year ends!
Happy New Year everyone!
I'll be selling Diving Monterey atlases at Steele's Discount Scuba on their last open day. Come by and celebrate with us!

Diving Monterey Atlas: Where to find it – Felt The best way to make maps on the internet.
As I've been dropping off atlases around the Bay Area, a trend emerges:
At least one copy of the atlas is almost immediately sold to someone working in the store who wants one for themselves.
My new atlas Diving Monterey is finally out in print! Find it this weekend in a Bay Area dive shop near you.
Hey it's Black Friday and everyone wants you to buy stuff!
Not me! That's because my new atlas Diving Monterey Vol II isn't out yet for another week or so. Don't worry- they'll be coming soon well before the Holidays.
Maybe you've seen my now sold out Vol I that I released this spring? The new one is a lot like that but with a square binding, some brand new content and a slicker look.
Inside you'll find:
10 full color, high resolution dive maps and accompanying text telling you exactly how to get in the water and what to see when you're there. Look for a new map of Yankee Point and Malpaso Creek
3 pages of field guides
2 bonus maps with local hiking trails for when you can't get in the water
There's so much more to Monterey diving than Point Lobos and the Breakwater. Come explore with us!
Volume II is coming soon to these locations:
Seals Water Sports, Santa Rosa
Pinnacles Dive Center, Fairfield
Bamboo Reef, San Francisco
Scuba Fusion, San Mateo
Aqua Safaris, Santa Cruz
California Ocean Adventures, Santa Cruz
Any Water Sports, San Jose
Monterey Bay Scuba, Monterey
California Scuba Center, Clovis
Just a few more tweaks before Volume II is ready!
Three new maps,
new field guide pages with more animals,
new look and new binding.
I'm really proud of how it's turning out.
The people have spoken! I've been sold out of my Diving Monterey atlas for a month and I'm already being asked for a second printing. Well, it's coming soon!
Finally got around to Malpaso Creek. Looking good! If you have a fun story about this area, send me a photo of yourself and a brief story as well as a description of where your story takes place and I'd love to include you in my next atlas to show off the whole dive community of California.
Nice day in the water.
Has anyone played with this app Steps? It's a crowd-sourced mapping app where people can add information about their favorite places. I added some points from http://opendivesites.org and I wonder if it could be useful to the California dive community https://go.steps.me/ReFW5ISIFrb

I taught a class on mapping in Prishtina, Kosovo and got to make some very fun maps including some ancient Roman ruins! https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/ulpiana-northern-necropolis-70bfcfca899e4a8e97795ad19a29dee1

What are your favorite places to dive in Sonoma and Mendocino?
Did you know that my waterproof dive maps (sold by the sheet, DM me for details) are dry erase compatible? Plan your dive, map your plan, then dive your map, over and over and over again.
Great for instructors or old pros who have to constantly remind their buddies what the plan is.
You can purchase posters of my maps at RedBubble. Link to my online store in bio link tree.

Did a fun talk for the Point Lobos Foundation for Earth Day about my maps. Take a peek!
https://youtu.be/8m8WejaGXuA
Thanks folks for joining and me for my talk about mapping Point Lobos for scuba divers. The talk was recorded and will be available in the next day or two.
If you tried to sign in and had issues, the fault is mine. The Pt Lobos Foundation was expecting an event only for their members but I posted the link online. Only the first hundred or so non-members to sign up got to join us. There will be other opportunities to learn more though, stay tuned!
