Summer Squash Omelette! We’re at that point in the California Summer where you’ve been gorging on strawberries, stuffing your mouth with blueberries, chomping on whole tomatoes like you’re eating an apple! The bounty of Summer is at its peak! And the squash are massive by now!

Our Summer Squash omelette is made with 3 organic eggs, squash, broccoli, mushrooms, and spinach with shaved parmesan and served with a side of toast. Delicious and satisfying. 🥚🥦🌞

We continue to revel in the bounty of summer at Shapeshifters Café. Tomorrow at the next First Saturday brunch we will be offering a summer squash omelet, pesto corn salad, strawberry shortcake, cherry lemonade and lavender lattes as well as Veracruz Avocado Toast and Cuban Toast made with Ed’s Breads + house-made pastries and breakfast burritos, coffee and tea. Come by anytime between 11am-3pm to fill up your belly.

Then after brunch, head on over to the Jack London Brewing District Block Party, happening just 6 blocks down from the café on 5th St. from 12-5pm where Shapeshifters Brewery will be joining fellow neighborhood craft breweries Original Pattern, Hella Coastal, Oakland United, Cellarmaker and Dokkabier for a day of beer, food, music and more!

Don’t forget, we have a sunny patio waiting for you. Just walk out through the back door of the café and there you are. 😎

We just stopped by some of our favorite roadside farm stands in Hollister and Gilroy to pick up the very best fruits and veggies of the season. These will all be featured in a dizzying array of delectable dishes during our next First Saturday Brunch at Shapeshifters Café, tomorrow from 11-3.

Come enjoy summer in the city on our sunny back patio with summer fruit crepes featuring farm fresh strawberries with lemon and sugar or sumptuous peaches with Chantilly cream.

Choose from one (or all!) of our seasonal toasts, including Veracruz Avocado Toast topped with spicy salsa macha, queso fresco, watermelon radishes and cilantro microgreens; Smoked Salmon Toast with herbed cream cheese, red onions and capers; and Pulled Pork Toast with ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickles and chipotle aioli—all made with freshly-baked flaxseed wheat by local cottage baker Ed’s Breads.

We will also have our popular breakfast burritos, corn pesto salad, house-made cherry turnovers, golden milk and lavender lattes, house-blended teas, cherry lemonade, flavored sodas and more.

Pesto Corn Salad! 🌽 Sweet yellow corn, chopped green beans, cherry tomatoes, red onions, and romaine lettuce tossed in a walnut pesto and sprinkled with shaved parmesan. This is a refreshing, flavorful Summer salad, conjuring up long, lazy picnics and rockin’ summer barbecues that last into the night. Top it with avocado and diced chicken for a truly satisfying meal. Cherry Lemonade! 🍒 🍋 Cherries are everywhere so we couldn’t resist making our delicious cherry syrup. Our Cherry Lemonade is made with our fresh squeezed lemonade, where we steep lemon zest in simple syrup, extracting lemony essential oils and aromas and add it to fresh lemon juice and water, then we pour it over ice and top it off with a shot of our cherry syrup. Whew!

And did you know you can add a shot of cherry syrup to any drink. Cherry Italian Soda! Cherry Mocha with whipped cream! Cherry Iced Matcha!

This Friday, 5/24, filmmaker Gustavo Vasquez joins us to present his documentary film “Los Guardianes del Maíz (Keepers of the Corn).

“Los Guardianes del Maíz” tells the story of native corn from the perspectives of indigenous farmers, artisans and cooks in Mexico whose ancestors shepherded the ever-evolving seeds from the dawn of agriculture into the 21st Century. It’s a story of collective labor spanning more than 350 generations. These voices are joined by community leaders, scientists, chefs, and others whose knowledge and activism stand not only in defense of food sovereignty and the genetic integrity, diversity, and community ownership of native seeds, but in defense of a durable cultural legacy and a way of life.

To augment your viewing experience, we will have house-made vegan and pork tamales as well as our house-made Tliltic Black Lager, both made using Mexican heirloom corn, available for purchase.

Join us this Saturday, May 4th for food, drink, music, vendors and more happening all day long at Shapeshifters, rain or shine!

We will be serving brunch in our café, from 11am-3pm featuring house-made pastries, seasonal toasts (made with local cottage baker Ed’s Breads freshly baked flaxseed wheat, layered with a variety of toppings) as well as breakfast burritos, coffee & espresso drinks, house-blended teas and more.

From 1-6pm we will continue the fun in our cinema space with tamales, house-made beer on tap and a steady stream of audio gems chosen from our collection of pop, punk, lounge and dollar bin vinyl records. Some of our favorite local artists and organizations will join us, including San Francisco Cinematheque, owllamode, Anna Firth, Nico Charuza, Maya Dijiji, Bright Moments, The Catman of West Oakland, and Ms. Lori’s Unique Boutique offering up a spectrum of eclectic and one-of-a-kind wares.

Oakland’s own Driveway Follies, purveyors of the amazing, annual Halloween puppet show, will be there with some of their handmade marionettes to show. They will also have a craft table where you and/or your kid can make your own paper bat puppet!

Our neighbors, Oakland Secret, will also be hosting their monthly Quartz Coven, right next door to the café from 1-6pm featuring a q***r arts market, open mic, fashion show and DJ sets.

Veracruz Avocado Toast was made beautiful by California grown avocados and watermelon radishes supplied by our friends at C&L Produce.

And that wonderful fried egg, basted tenderly in Clover butter from .sonoma and placed carefully on bacon and avocado. Made with eggs from Petaluma Farms.

We will be open for brunch this Saturday, April 6th, from 11am-3pm! And we will be open every first Saturday of the month. We will have a special menu featuring Ed’s Breads, . Ed’s Breads are made in small batches in a cottage bakery, using Ed’s wild sour starter and whole grain. Full of flavor, complex, high-hydration bread.

The cinema & brewery will also be open next door, serving delicious frosty beverages, .

Strawberry Turnovers today! Made in-house, with our own hand rolled pastry dough and filled with strawberries cooked down in sugar and a little lemon juice. Buttery, flakey, with just a hint of sweetness. 🍓🌾 🧈

We can’t wait for Spring! This week we added a new special: Mediterranean Pasta Salad. A simple dish, with fresh veggies including asparagus.

Tri-color rotini pasta with feta cheese, black olives, red bell peppers, cucumbers, red onions, cherry tomatoes, and grilled asparagus, tossed in our tangy house dressing. Enjoy!

Plat du Jour! Monte Cristo, a classic “French Sandwich”, invented by Americans of course, with ham and melted Swiss cheese on French Toast made with sliced pullman croissant bread from and raspberry preserves from . And try our Croissant French Toast with sliced bananas.

Mid-Winter pear and ginger scones, made with fresh Bosc pears and fresh grated ginger, topped with coarse natural sugar. We use a blend of all purpose flour and whole wheat Hard Red Winter Wheat flour from . Simple ingredients. Delicious.

We will have our popular breakfast burritos available as well as a special, limited menu of toasts made with Ed’s Breads (avocado w/queso fresco, salsa macha and microgreens; smoked trout w/thinly sliced red onions and hummus; Nutella w/sliced bananas and crushed hazelnuts) and scones (savory pepperjack-bacon; blackberry-lemon) + all of our regular espresso, coffee, tea, juice and soda drinks.

If you haven’t had a chance to stop by the café during our regular weekly hours, now’s your chance to check it out!

Come in and warm up with a grilled cheese sandwich and chicken bone broth. Our grilled cheese has melted Gruyère and Jack on a pressed French Torpedo roll from , rubbed with honey butter and topped other Maldon salt. Served with cornichons and mixed greens in an herb vinaigrette. And our house-made chicken bone broth, topped with savory herbs and garlic, is satisfying and delicious on its own.
