Prioritizing Affordability Through the Foreclosure Intervention Housing Preservation Program | Enterprise Community Partners 05/28/2024

Our partners at Enterprise Community Partners recently published a blog post on the importance of the Foreclosure Intervention Housing Preservation Program (FIHPP) in California as it potentially faces elimination in the state budget. FIHPP is a critical resource that would fund nonprofit housing organizations to purchase rental properties in or at risk of foreclosure, allowing them to quickly convert unsubsidized homes into long-term affordable housing.

Our organization is among the CDFI lenders that was selected to administer FIHPP capital funds under the proposed program, which was due to roll out this year. Foreclosed properties are often targets for some landlords who decide to increase rents, evict families, or flip the properties for resale. Through this program, households in homes at risk of foreclosure, who are more likely low-income and vulnerable to housing instability, are able to avoid displacement and the risk of experiencing homelessness. The blog closes by urging policymakers to understand how crucial FIHPP is, especially in the midst of the affordable housing crisis, and advocates to maintain funding for the program.

To help protect the FIHPP program, please message or call the following members of the California legislature:

Statewide: Submit a message to the office of Assembly Speaker Rivas and Senate Pro Tem McGuire

For stakeholders who live or work in San Francisco: Call the office of Senate Budget Chair Wiener at (415) 557-1300

For stakeholders who live or work in the San Fernando Valley: Call the office of Assembly Budget Chair Gabriel at (818) 380-2460”

California’s recently formed Foreclosure Intervention Housing Preservation Program (FIHPP) is poised to fund nonprofit housing groups to buy rental properties in or at risk of foreclosure and quickly convert them to long-term affordable housing. Now, FIHPP is hanging in the legislative balance. LISC’s Tahirih Ziegleri and Enterprise Community Partners’ Jacqueline Waggoner weigh in on the imperative of safeguarding the program to help spare many Californians from the preventable tragedies of displacement and homelessness.

Calling all Oakland residents, leaders, and small business owners! Join us for a transformative workshop tomorrow May 1st: "Activating Your Commerical Corridor"

In Oakland, commercial corridors are the backbone of our communities. It's time to harness your power to shape our corridors for the better. From deep East to Central to West Oakland, initiatives like 7th Street Thrives led by EBPREC, Black Cultural Zone, and Friends of San Antonio Park led by Trybe are leading the charge to activate space, engage residents, preserve culture, and amplify BIPOC businesses.

This workshop highlights the incredible work that organizers and neighbors are collaboratively building, how small businesses can support this work, and how to get involved. This rich discussion will be moderated by Sasha Werblin, Director of Economic Development at LISC Bay Area. Hear from Noni Session, Co-founder and Executive Director of the East Bay Permanent Real Estate Cooperative; C.J. Johnson, Founding CEO of the Black Cultural Zone CDC; and Andrew Park, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Trybe.

🔍 What to expect:

2. Understand how small businesses can play a critical role and how to get involved.

3. Hear how we advocate for public service needs in these neighborhoods.
