MetLife Foundation partnered with the China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF) and Give2Asia to launch the Women's Empowerment Employment Retail Training Program in Guangzhou, China.

The upskilling program will provide retail training to 1,900 women in Guangzhou, improving their vocational skills and boosting their confidence for a successful career path. ๐ŸŒโœจ

On Monday, Dec 19, 2023, a devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck northwest China, hitting Gansu province. At least 127 lives have been lost, with over 700 injured. President Xi Jinping has mobilized thousands of rescue workers to address the crisis in this economically challenged and diverse region.

Rescue operations are focused on extracting individuals trapped in debris, providing crucial medical treatment, and addressing immediate needs like food, shelter, and medical supplies. ๐ŸŒŸ Friends Fund Friday ๐ŸŒŸ Today, we're spotlighting Phare Ponleu Selpak - Battambang (PPSA) as they mark their 30th anniversary! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ญ Phare Ponleu Selpak, meaning "the Brightness of the Arts" in Khmer, is transforming the lives of Cambodian youth through art, empowering underprivileged youth to pursue education and artistic dreams. ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽจ

Meet Krud Sovannara, a 17-year-old from a village near Battambang, whose family makes $160 in monthly income from clothes washing and taxi driving. Phare has provided him and his three siblings with free education at the public school on the Phare Ponleu Selpak campus. Due to their challenging circumstances, they also receive free daily lunch and a monthly allowance. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ˜‡

Thanks to Phare's support, Sovannara is excelling in grade 11 at Phare Public School and pursuing theatre at Phare Performing Art School. ๐ŸŽญ Phare's diverse curriculum covers child rights, communication skills, public speaking, youth club activities, and public awareness. Sovannara is dedicated to his studies and a role model for Phare's next generation. His parents, despite financial constraints, continuously encourage him. ๐Ÿ’ชโœจ

Escalating hostilities in Gaza have created an urgent humanitarian crisis. The Gaza Ministry of Health has reported that at least 11,078 Palestinians, including 3,900 children and 2,430 women, have been killed, and 27,490 others injured. Additionally, 2,000 individuals, including 1,250 children, are reported missing.

Give2Asia is working with the Egyptian Food Bank (EFB) to support people in Gaza by distributing essential โ€œReady to Eatโ€ family boxes that include mineral water, milk, cheese, dates, and canned items that are critically urgent. EFB is one of the few organizations with direct access to Gaza through the Rafah border and is working directly with the United Nations Relief Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the Palestine Red Crescent Society.

๐ŸšจDisaster Alert๐Ÿšจ On November 3, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing more than 150 people, including the Deputy Mayor of Nalagad Rural Municipality and 30 children. A further 200 people have been injured. The impact collapsed multiple-story brick houses, necessitating survivors to extract those trapped under the rubble. The fear of further tremors and structural damage forced many to spend the night outdoors.

โœจFriends Fund Fridayโœจ Today, we spotlight our partner, the WHO Foundation, for their vital work in .

Over 2 million people โ€” nearly half of them children โ€” were already in need of urgent medical care in Gaza. Vulnerable people, including children, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses, and injured people, urgently need critical medical care as a result of ongoing hostilities.

โ›‘๏ธ WHO is on the ground, responding by providing medical supplies within Gaza to expand emergency care and positioning enough supplies at the border of Egypt to care for 300,000 people. Staff extensively trained by WHO in mass casualty management have already been deployed to care for the sick and injured.

Afesip Cambodia is dedicated to breaking the cycle of trafficking, r**e, and exploitation in Cambodia. They rescue, recover, and restore survivors, prevent exploitation, collaborate with authorities, and promote economic recovery. AFESIP has just completed its latest round of scholarships for 2023! For just US$51,000, AFESIP has supported 17 survivors with scholarships to study Law, Marketing, Psychology, and more. Grant money covered tuition, monthly living allowances, accommodation, transportation, and healthcare. Four of this year's beneficiaries have already graduated and secured sustainable careers ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ“š

โ—Disaster Alertโ—Support relief and recovery efforts in response to the September 2023 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Morocco's Marrakesh-Safi region

โ›‘๏ธ On September 8, 2023, at 23:11 local time, a powerful earthquake struck Moroccoโ€™s Marrakesh-Safi region, registering a magnitude between 6.8 and 6.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located approximately 73.4 kilometers (45.6 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, near Ighil and the Oukaรฏmeden ski resort, in the Atlas Mountains. As of September 11, 2023, more than 2,800 reported fatalities have occurred predominantly outside Marrakesh. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with responders tirelessly searching through the debris, and the death toll continues to rise. This earthquake now stands as Moroccoโ€™s most powerful and deadliest instrumentally recorded earthquake since 1960. Globally, it ranks as the second-deadliest earthquake this year, following the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake.
