Honfleur Gallery presents Stevens Jay Carter : Modern Master (1958-2021), showcasing a powerful spectrum of work from January 14, 2023 to February 18, 2023.
Stevens was a dynamic and prolific American abstract visual artist, who worked tirelessly to be artistically diverse, employing a range of mediums - from painting and sculpture to clothing and decor - to articulate his many visions. In recent years, his work addressed the coronavirus pandemic and other critical social issues. Stevens’ ethos and unwavering tenacity to be a positive force through art, rendering peace and harmony, resonates brightly through his collected works. This exhibition features pieces that explore the essence of America in its many forms. With titles including Amerressence, Emblematic, Corporate Corruption, Euphoria, and Silent, Stevens’ themes are socially relevant and hopeful.
A true humanitarian and community organizer, Stevens extended his vision beyond his own work, co-founding Project Brasas in Washington, D.C. to showcase the work of artists in alternative arts spaces in D.C.’s Penn Quarter. In his Oakland, California neighborhood, he and his wife Carol co-founded the International Peace and Art Center, hosting events that promoted peace and harmony through the arts. In Stevens’ world, joy and hope rule, through musically inspired works shining much-needed light on the redemptive possibilities of human connection.
