Johansson Projects is a contemporary art gallery that functions as curatorial laboratory, creating exhibitions that pair established and internationally-recognized artists with up-and-coming locals. With no show confined purely to gallery walls it prompts viewers to actively engage with artists who explore the mysteries embedded in modernity often using unorthodox materials and methods. Happy belated birthday to the magical Anna Fidler! Posted • Fumoir II (Holly’s House), 28x20”, gouache on linen, 2024. I am a creature of habit. This summer if I’m not in the studio, I’m swimming laps and if I’m not in Corvallis, I’m in Portland staying over at my friend house. This is a portrait of her living room with the ephemeral smoke of spirits in the air. And more about routine and ritual— to concentrate more deeply, it’s easiest not to make decisions, so I wear the same black painting dress and eat the same breakfast everyday— seven black cherries, one egg on a tortilla with sharp cheddar cheese, coffee with cream and honey, and two glasses of water.
These Fields Dream of Fire is Andrew Catanese's second solo show at Johansson Projects. The work encompasses a time spent in residency at Oak Spring Garden Foundation, take a journey through the exhibition this week Thurs-Sat 1-5.
Introducing French artist Julien Laporte (1995, Perignan, France), Julien finds inspiration in the vibrant hues of fauvism and the luminous landscapes of the south of France. Painting to the rhythm of carefully curated music, he seamlessly integrates childhood memories and Catalonian adventures into his artwork. Travel remains an integral part of his creative process, enriching his repertoire with a tapestry of diverse imagery.
We’re excited to have Iván Carmona and Anna Fidler in the gallery for their two-person exhibition Idolatrada: Of Spirits and Saints. Here the artists’ work can be seen together in last year's show at Schneider Museum.

Andrew Catanese's second solo show with Johansson Projects includes gouache on paper, oil on canvas, and a repeat, generous invitation into the symbolic world of flora and fauna that colors their life.
This body of work specifically highlights the landscape of a chase that predates America. Andrew is grappling with a return to home and its attendant, yet unexpected re-enchantment. They provide us an intimate, almost voyeuristic entre to the interplay between hunter and hunted. Horses, hounds, foxes, and folk are all included in what presents as rich allegory, fable, and even fantasy of the American South.
Join us for an opening reception and artist walk-through Sat, July 27 from 3-5

Miguel Arzabe in his studio with this striking new woven canvas. Cóndores Rojos, 2024, Woven acrylic on canvas and linen, 56” x 78”
In a laborious process, Arzabe creates two abstract paintings, slices them into strips, then weaves them together. As an exploration of Arzabe’s own Andean heritage, his work references indigenous Bolivian Sacaca textiles, highly regarded for their intricate geometric patterns and vibrant colors. In lieu of thread, Arzabe’s half inch strips of canvas and paper result in scaled up textile-like works that move between bold colorful Andean patterns and painterly brush marks and organic shapes. Operating between the mediums of painting and textiles, Arzabe’s work produce a space where Western abstract painting meets indigenous craft.

This exhibition is the second in a series highlighting contemporary Bay Area artists in our collection. The installation explores how artists relate to their environments through place: place as the physical land, place as heritage, place as the imaginary, and place as belonging.
Several artists examine climate change and its local impact. In Saif Azzuz’s Lo’op’ (It burns) (2021), he draws the color palette from maps of the 2021 droughts and fires in California. Other artists use found materials not only to address ecological issues but also to add layers of meaning, such as in Guillermo Galindo’s Ready to Go (2015), made from a broken bicycle and chair he found along the US-Mexico border. And others play with figure and ground: Clare Rojas’s Walking in Rainbow Rain (2021) is a meditation on disappearing into one’s environment. The drab cityscape is brightened by the rain’s rainbow palette, which also alludes to the history of the LGBTQ+ movement in San Francisco. The works on display, exploring themes of belonging, ecological stewardship, and social justice, are drawn from the 2022 Svane Family Foundation gift of 42 works by more than 30 local artists.
About Place: Bay Area Artists from the Svane Gift This installation highlights contemporary Bay Area artists, and explores themes of belonging, ecological stewardship, and social justice.

🩷SOME LOVE FOR AMY LINCOLN🩵
As a designer, it’s my life’s work to make the world a more beautiful place. That’s why I made this account and this community, because I really think taking a moment to check out something world-bendingly cool will brighten your day!
Enter Amy Lincoln. Her instantly-recognizable dreamscapes create the illusion of movement and depth with her use of gradients and overlapping geometric shapes. Her expert use of color makes her paintings intensely awe-inspiring.
I love that her work is simultaneously familiar, like a summer sunset or starry sky, while also transporting as if to another world. The prismatic effect of her gradients paired with her clean-lined shapes gives her amazing work a satisfying, kaleidoscopic crispness.
For me, her paintings are instantly uplifting. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing her and following her work for years, and I find myself peeking at her IG

“Amy Lincoln chooses three colors to mix per painting. Meticulously planned mockups shape orientation and color, while transparency and incandescence are achieved through layers of gradation that depicts “light moving across a surface.” -Trinie Dalton

"...the technologies of weaving — especially the miraculous punch hole system of the Jacquard loom, invented at the beginning of the 19th century — led directly into the computer technologies that have transformed our world. Weaving, that’s to say, is not some peripheral subject, off to the side of culture. It’s one of the most extraordinary, sophisticated things humans have ever managed to do. It’s connected not just to survival tools (clothing, blankets, baskets, traps), but also to the human capacity for abstract thought, and of course to beauty and art..."
