Our Braised Angus Oxtail Encendido is the dish at the heart of alaMar. It’s been on our menu since the first day we opened, even before we were a Dominican restaurant, because it was the meal wanted to serve at to pay tribute to his mom and family lineage.

We serve our oxtail with stewed butter beans, chile africano, and charred pearl onion. It is deeply flavorful and nourishing - the ultimate comfort food. Have you had this very special dish before?

Our Platos Banderos are a customer favorite from our lunch menu. They are classic Dominican lunch and we love getting to share it with you all! 🇩🇴

Here’s what you get when you order one:

1. A protein: Sofrito Chicken, Slow Roasted Pork Pernil, Dominican Fried Goat, or Stewed Bacolao (shown here!)
2. Yellow Caribbean Rice: made with turmeric, garlic, onion, oregano
3. Plantains: your choice between soft & sweet maduros or crispy & savory tostones
4. Pickled cabbage: perfectly crunchy & tangy slaw
5. Habicheulas rojas: deeply flavorful Dominican stewed red beans

On our lunch menu only: the Longaniza smothered dog 🌭🔥

This loaded dog is like no other in the Bay. It’s a perfectly grilled pork sausage topped with our famous braised oxtail, habichuela, feta, pickled cabbage, and mayo-ketchup. Served on a sweet island roll and with a side of tostones.

Pork longaniza is shared amongst Islanders. It’s a favorite snack to eat with a nice cold beer or soda. We give our version an NYC twist buy making it a loaded hot dog 🌭

Introducing the Dominican chimi smashburger 🍔

a popular street food in the Dominican Republic, a Dominican chimi is a type of burger made with seasoned beef or pork that’s topped with cabbage, onions, tomatoes, and a special sauce, all served on a soft roll. It’s known for its bold flavors and is often enjoyed with a side of fries or fried plantains.

Our alaMar version takes it up a notch by giving tribute to NYC with a nod to California. We use fresh savoy cabbage and confit tomato, and use and a fluffy Pretzel as a bun like you get at the corners of the block in NYC.

We’ve been doing this burger for years as a one off menu item but it’s now permanently on the menu for lunch only. Come get it Wednesday - Friday, 11:30am - 3pm. Dine-in order takeout on !

As you may have heard, we were broken into twice early this morning. There’s no way to say this lightly - this break in was crucially damaging for us. Everyone knows it’s tough to be in business in Oakland right now and we have not been immune to hardship. This break-in has put us in a dire situation financially and we could really use your support right now so we can stay in business. We credit Jon for bringing fun service back to alaMar. Our regulars love to see him, and he’s an integral leader to our team that brings great experience and sense of unshakeable calmness. He really embodies the idea living life to the fullest, which we so appreciate since it is also central to Dominican culture.

He’s been with us for two years, and we’re so lucky to have him. Michael brought back that neighborhood bar feeling that we had in the past where everyone knows your name. Through Sancocho you can dive into the heart and soul of Dominican cuisine with rich and soul-warming stew that embodies the essence of tradition, family, and flavor. This hearty dish, featuring a medley of root vegetables and aromatic spices, is a celebration of the cherished gatherings and vibrant culture of the Dominican Republic.
