Join Lydia Mills, director of the Kodaly Institute in Chile, and author of the recently published book "La Magia de Kodály," this summer at the University of Redlands, northern California campus!
Lydia will be teaching Kodály pedagogy in Spanish, using traditional singing games and folk songs from different regions in Latin America. Course includes a practicum component where participants have the opportunity to peer teach lesson segments and learn how to implement the Kodály philosophy in Spanish with traditional folk songs and singing games from Latin America. In Music Literature, participants will use folk song analysis and begin to create their own portfolio of songs and games in Spanish to use in their classroom.
This course is especially designed for music teachers teaching in Spanish and/or teaching Spanish songs in the classroom to supplement the songs and games in English. Participants who have already taken Kodály levels courses in English but want to learn repertoire in Spanish and gain experience teaching in Spanish are welcome to come!

This week, The Library of Congress announced the induction of "The Very First Mariachi Recordings (1908-1909)" by the Cuarteto Coculense into the National Recording Registry.
Recorded in Mexico City shortly before the Mexican Revolution, this album presents the earliest recordings of mariachi music and offers us a peek into an era when mariachi music was still an obscure, regional style.

“God Moved on the Water”: Song of the Month – April/2023
https://kodaly.hnu.edu/news.cfm
[Notes prepared by Anne Laskey]
The sinking of the SS Titanic took place on April 14, 1912. There were any number of reasons “that great ship went down”: from design flaws and an inexperienced crew, to a lack of lifeboats and a failure to heed the warnings from other ships, and—perhaps lesser known—an unusually warm year, in which many icebergs broke off from the polar ice cap. But in the flood of folklore that grew up about the sinking of the Titanic, it was the tale of human pride and sacrifice that gained the day. “God Moved on the Water,” was performed by Washington (“Lightnin’”) and a group of inmates at Darrington State Prison in Sandy Point, Texas in 1933.

We remember Gabrielle Emery-Reece (Holy Names alumna '81) who sadly passed away recently.
Gabrielle's work in regional Queensland Australia was remarkable. Her generosity, musicality, drive and vision ensured generations of regional teachers (teachers in the "village schools" - Kodály ) were well equipped to "teach children through music". (GE-R).
Read more about Gabrielle's contributions here: https://kodaly.org.au/about/honorary-life-members/gabrielle-emery-reece/
And here is an interview from 2019, where she reflects on her Kodály inspired journey:
