Recently, , our VP of Coffee, embarked on an inspiring trip to El Salvador and Honduras, immersing himself in the vibrant communities that cultivate some of our finest coffees.

El Salvador
John’s journey began at Finca San Carlos in Cordillera Balsamo, where he met with Carlos Borgonovo, a third-generation coffee producer at . For over 20 years, we’ve shared a strong partnership with Carlos and his family, whose dedication to quality and community aligns perfectly with our values. This visit was particularly special as he saw firsthand how our collaboration supports local initiatives, like the daycare center that benefits from their farm’s proceeds.

Honduras
Next, John traveled with Carlos to Santa Elena, Honduras, to visit Mayra Orellano-Powell and her husband, Lowell, at . Mayra’s story is truly inspiring—she started importing coffee from her hometown community over 20 years ago while living in the Bay Area. This passion and dedication allowed her to return to Honduras and continue her mission to support smallholder farmers. Working with farmers who cultivate just 1-2 acres, Catracha Coffee guarantees fair prices and additional premiums, fostering sustainability and growth.

In Honduras, John also had the privilege of meeting several farmers and witnessed their efforts to produce coffee in a sustainable manner, efforts that are socially responsible and work in harmony with the environment. We’re also looking to purchase one of Catracha Coffee’s micro-lots, which we think will continue our dedication to transparent and direct trade practices we hold dear.

This reaffirmed our commitment to sourcing the highest quality coffee while supporting the communities that make it all possible. Stay tuned as we bring these delicious coffees from El Salvador and Honduras to your cup, representing the craftsmanship and dedication of the families behind every bean.

It’s anniversary week at ! Every day this week we’re bringing back a special chef collaboration drink, with all five drinks available on Saturday, June 1. You’ll find signature coffee drinks from Chefs , , , Denise Huynh, and . Grab a passport and get points for each chef collab you try to be entered into a raffle. Note: Details available at .

Don’t miss $1 espresso shots every day this week, too. Made with Mr. Espresso’s signature Neapolitan
Blend. ☕️

Photos from Mr. Espresso's post 05/27/2024

Crafted by our founder Carlo Di Ruocco, our signature Neapolitan Espresso pays homage to Naples, Italy, drawing inspiration from its rich coffee heritage. For over 40 years, it’s been the go-to choice for countless espresso lovers, earning accolades like being hailed by renowned food writer as “the best coffee I ever tasted in the U.S.”

What makes this espresso unique? Intentionally sourcing beans from long-time partners, our roast master, Carlo’s son John, works with producers who are known for their commitment to growing premium coffee. This offers continuity and traceability. Then beans selected from six or more origins are roasted, separately by source. Only then are the beans carefully blended to achieve this authentic and classic, Italian-style espresso. Inspired by Italian tradition — elevated for contemporary values and contemporary tastes.

Enjoy our Neapolitan Espresso for a home-brewed, crema-laden cup—nutty, chocolaty, and slightly bitter notes included. Order here: bit.ly/NeapolitanNow ☕️

Or visit us at The Caffè and taste what we’re talking about - This week only, The Caffè is celebrating a year of community, culture, and coffee with $1 espresso shots of this deliciously distinctive blend. Join us for this and more 🎉

the early 1950s where we catch a glimpse Carlo Di Ruocco, the founder and president of Mr. Espresso, fueled by his enduring passion for coffee. ☕️

In this snapshot, we see Carlo during his youth at Nesler Coloniale’s confection and coffee bar, nestled in his hometown of Salerno, just across the road from Nesler Roasters. There, Carlo embarked on his journey into the world of coffee craftsmanship, learning the art of oak wood roasting as the master roaster’s assistant.

Today, we proudly carry forward the legacy of Italian coffee craftsmanship, roasting our beans exclusively in a traditional wood-fired roaster. Beyond preserving tradition, our focus remains on delivering coffee that not only honors our heritage but also tastes delicious. ✨

The Caffè architect, jones | haydu, was recently recognized for the project’s stunning design by distinguished peers — the IIDA Northern California Chapter! The award category JEWEL BOX recognizes spaces, “Where we indulge: retail, wellness, hospitality, healthcare, and other experiential destinations on a smaller, more intimate scale. Projects under 5,000 usable square feet.”

The Caffè co-owners, Luigi, John, and Laura would like to express their deep gratitude to Hulett Jones and his jones|haydu team for seeing this project through during the most challenging times. The team’s commitment was unwavering — they took our vision for a space that reflected our unique values, and delivered a precious jewel, indeed! Grazie mille & bravo team, well done!!

Also, our deep thanks IIAD NorCal for acknowledging this project in a strong field of design talent. We are humbled to bring this space to our Oakland community — a place of beauty to gather, to rest, and to recharge.

Coming soon first Chef Collab of 2024! We’re very excited to bring Chef Nora Haron’s Kopi Avocado to Oakland!

Many of you know from Drip Line, the well-loved café gathering spot that was in West Oakland. Or you may have relished the delicious eats from her pandemic pop-up IndoMex. But did you know, previous chef duties included managing food operations for Blue Bottle and Farley’s? So Chef Nora knows a thing or two about coffee!

In Spring 2023, Chef Nora opened her love letter to her background’s Nusantara cuisine of Singapore and Indonesia — SanDai .us and adjoining Kopi Bar .us (“kopi” being coffee) — in Walnut Creek. It was an instant hit!

The luscious Kopi Avocado has been a Kopi Bar favorite. So we can’t wait to bring it to you in Oakland, just in time for those healthy New Year’s resolutions. Get ready for Monday, January 8th!

So with his family at his side, Carlo has passionately pursued his vision. Countless cups later, your love for stands as the best testament to ’s success.

On behalf of Carlo and family, along with the entire Mr. Espresso team, we thank you — from the bottom of our hearts for your generous support over the past four-plus decades. Grazie infinite ✨
