Plein Air Artist Spotlight: Nancy Thomas

Thomas’s early studies were at the Torpedo Factory, The Corcoran School of Art and Northern VA Community College. A travel study tour of Italy, prompted Thomas to take up watercolor.

With the Plein Air movement she returned to oil painting and juried into Plein Air Easton 2018. One of her exhibit pieces was purchased for a permanent collection by The Avalon Foundation.

There are two opportunities to buy the original art. You are invited to the free “Wet Paint Sales” on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 5-7 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 1-3 p.m. Both sales are held at the waterfront Ocean City Center for the Arts, 502 94th St. bayside, and both are free to attend.

Plein Air Artist Spotlight: Jim Rehak

"I capture the seasonal changes of the landscape through my plein air paintings. My enthusiasm for plein air takes me outside to paint fields, marshes, farms, rivers and bays wherever I travel. My interest in art started with comic book illustration at an early age. It was while studying for my BFA at Maryland Institute College of Art that an interest in oil painting emerged. Art has always been a vocation for me - as a portrait and caricature artist, art director at a sign company, teacher and freelance court illustrator." - Jim Rehak

Plein Air Artist Spotlight: Jose Ramirez

Jose Ramirez is a watercolor and oil painting artist, originally from Guatemala, and currently living in Dorchester County MD. He began his career as a professional artist in 2009, after attending the Manuel Herrarte Lemuz art school in Chiquimula Guatemala. He began exhibiting his art at the age of twenty one.

Today, he is a plein air and studio painter using both mediums. As an artist, he has found the creative inspiration he desires, and the ability to communicate his excitement and love for nature, people and everything that surrounds him. He has always been an artist. He paints what he loves, what he knows, where he lives. He loves create paintings from the simple act of looking. He is inspired by the beauty and presence of the things he see. The way light affects ordinary objects. Through his paintings he likes to look for the relationship between light, shadow, and sometimes atmosphere. After moving to the United States in 2012, he has been developing a unique style that’s smooth and realistic. His intention is not to create a photo realistic image of a scene, but to capture the feeling evoked by his subjects.

After becoming a member of the Academy Art Museum based in Easton MD, attending open studios to draw portraits and human figures from life, has been an important part of his artistic training. Jose Ramirez is also a member of the Plein Air Painters of the Chesapeake Bay located in Eston MD and a member of the Working Artists Forum, Easton MD.

Plein Air Artist Spotlight: Ed Lewandowski

"I am drawn to the sea. Since my early childhood, time on the water has been a constant in my life. From owning my first boat at age twelve to getting a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology to early morning waterfowl hunts on the Delaware Bayshore, the rise and fall of the tides has influenced my sense of place and filled me with wonder. The ocean, bays, beaches and marshes of the Delmarva Peninsula are recurring themes in my artwork with water scenes often displaying many moods. My goal with each is to capture the beauty of those environments and direct viewer attention to a scene that might often not be noticed by a casual passerby." - Ed Lewandowski

Plein Air Artist Spotlight: Mimi Little

"Working in acrylics, collage, cold wax/oil I have produced series of paintings that have been influenced by every aspect of my life. A project to help restore a to***co barn in Southern Maryland introduced me to the abstract shapes that light seen from the inside of the barn produce. The clear light and color of Florida brought a series full of color, tropical birds and foliage. A trip to Zimbabwe to help build a clinic near Victoria Falls introduced me to new colors and designs. I approach each new series without expectation or formula. This allows me to move around the idea, to change the mood and sometimes even subject matter of the painting as I progress into the series.

My paintings are abstract in nature. Although the majority of my work is painted in the studio, I enjoy painting en plein air (from nature). It challenges me to find a composition in a world of infinite possibilities." - Mimi Little

Artist Spotlight: Martha Pileggi

Please welcome Martha to our 2024 Artists Paint OC roster!

Martha Pileggi has been creating artwork for over 60 years. Previously known for her work in watercolors, painted tiles, etchings and beaded jewelry since the 1980s and now painting “Plein Air” in oils for the past 13 years. Martha now paints almost exclusively outside from 3 to 5 days a week with various Plein Air groups and on her own throughout Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. She participates in many local Plein Air painting events.

The Art League of Ocean City MD invites local and regional artists to participate in the annual "Artists Paint OC" Plein Air Event, August 14-18, 2024! Whether you enjoy painting the sunny beaches, marshy bays, or vibrant boardwalk - it's all here for you to choose from.

A total of $6,050 in cash prizes will be awarded in this year's event!

The competition is limited to 50 artists, age 18 or older, on a first-come basis. All registered artists will have the opportunity to paint during the event, sell their work at the Wet Paint Sale, and paint a Quick Paint competition. Artwork juried in will be featured in the main gallery through September 28th and eligible for awards.

A tribute to artist Ray Ewing who was a staple at the Artist Paint OC event each year. May his memory be a blessing.

We mourn the loss of member Artist Raymond Ewing. Ray was a superb plein air artist, teacher, mentor and friend. May his beautiful artwork be his legacy.
