Just a few projects this past year. Sometimes I just forget to post pictures.
I made these lithophanes for my cousins for Xmas. This is my aunt and uncle. The frame has LED lights around the edges to illuminate the corian.
Delivered a sign today. The red is sheet aluminum/.
A customer wanted signs for their lake house. They had to match the signs that were already in place. This is the first time I have done white letters. I like it.
Another dog.
A couple of unusual requests. The clothes hangers are going to be vintage recreations. The red, yellow, black and blue pieces have tenons and insert into the white center piece to make a rosecrucian cross. That way the cross can be taken apart. The colors are spray ink.
I am cutting custom veneer from a highly figured piece of wood. My customer needs a special grain for his customers and I make his wood veneer on my bandsaw using a special sliding table on my bandsaw.
Usually, Bradford pear is only good to burn. Not much good for turning. However, I saw a chunk of crotch wood in my burn pile. This was a tree destroyed by last year’s ice storm and thought I might give it a go. The crotch is where branches diverge. There are three branches visible in this bowl.
Another little bowl I made from dyed wood. And here are better pictures because Karen took the photos.
I made a couple of “mise en place” bowls. At least that was my intent. That is a French term that refers to cooking and translated means everything in its place. I chose an Australian species, red gum. First time to ever use it, and turns out it has these little voids all in it and you don’t know it until you cut it open. The piece of wood was two inches thick and four inches high and four inches wide. Since there are holes through them, they won’t work as intended, for example holding all your dry spices premeasured and in one little bowl so you dump them in all at once. I believe the concept is to get all the ingredients ready before you start cooking. Anyway, the bowls look great, but boy did I fail at making a couple of mise en place bowls. Can you say repurpose?
Made a couple of memorials for Allen. Left is maple with brown trans tint.. On the right is Brazilian cherry. Both images are cut from maple and detailed with a glazing process. The letters are accented with spray ink. This is a process for sure.
How do you make a cutting board and matching trivet like this? Cut raw material into slices. Glue them together in alternating colors. One glue up is dark wood dominant, the other glue up is light wood dominant. Wait 24 hours. Sand or plane flat and true. Cut slices of the glued up boards into slices again, but cross grain to the original cuts. Flip the slices on end and arrange them to make this pattern. Glue these slices up very carefully to try and keep the lines straight. Wait 24 hours. Take the resulting cutting board and trivet and sand the living daylights out of them until they are smooth and flat on both sides. And treat the boards with water proofing material, in this case a combination of oil and wax.
This is a walkboard. It goes inside an organ and gives the technician access to the back side of the pipes. Hence the name walk board. This is quartersawn white oak tinted with a dye.
Finished caning this chair. It came to me all messed up and I showed some photos of the progress. It takes four layers of reed to complete the weave. The reed is 1/8 inch wide.
On the left is the raw material. On the right are the two legs. These things are massive. 5.25 inch diameter, 35.25 long.
For Burns Flat - Dill City consolidated school. They were not able to have prom last year so the class wanted to purchase something for the school. The small piece was a leftover so I mounted it on another scrap as a donation. The main piece is white oak with padauk, Purple Heart, and maple inlay. The letters are walnut.
A custom build. This is for an 11 year old baseball stud. I had no idea they got rings like this. Customer supplied photo.
The red letter edition of the beautitudes. The ruler is for scale. This piece is almost two inches thick. The wood is cherry.
I received a new shipment of wood from Indonesia. This stuff is awesome.
How to make a text inlay. Cut the female shapes into the wood. Cut the male shapes in a contrasting wood. Slice the pieces off of the second wood. I used blu tape to keep everything organized while I sliced them off the wood. Peel them off the tape and glue them in. Give it a good sanding and nice edge and I finished this with mineral oil followed by a beeswax mineral oil solution heated in the microwave. Let it soak in a couple of days and then buff the excess away.
Before and after painted letters.
A large reversible cutting board/pastry mat made from cherry. 24 by 36 inches.
Seven inch diameter oak legs. Oak is such a pain to turn.
Talk about a big butcher block counter top. This turned out so pretty that it made me want to make one for myself. Problem is, where would I use it? This is cherry and it weighed a TON. This is for a kitchen island. I can say that the pictures just don’t really show how nice this counter top is. It almost filled the bed of my pickup. The sun makes it look a little darker, but after I put the conditioner on it, I really wanted one for myself. It is a full two inches thick.
This is one I have wanted to do a LONG time. With my very limited capabilities due to vision, this is about all I can do. Turn my machine on and walk away. And this is what it looks like after finish, before finish, and on the machine. It is 12 by 12 inches.
I was subbed out for this one. A chiropractor wanted a bat with a spine on it. The spine is 14 inches in length.
I engraved a small stool for a gentleman’s grand daughter. Quality control approved by Bonnie and Clyde.
Portholes installed!
An update on the bed. The headboard was mounted after I installed the lights. I am glad I am finished with this job.
Chair leg replacement. Showing from beginning to end of process.
