Last week, HSOK hosted our 27th annual Wee Water Wahoo events! First, we hosted our in-person event at the Young Family Athletic Center! Goldfish Swim School - Edmond gave water safety education before the kindergarten students jumped in the pool! While swimming, volunteers from Westwood Aquatics , Sooner Swim Club, Riversport OKC and the Norman High School Swim Team helped them swim safely. A special thank you to Hideaway Pizza who donated pizza for our volunteers to enjoy. The day after our in-person event, HSOK hosted our virtual event! Kindergarten classrooms all over Oklahoma logged on to hear water safety education and had some fun! We could not have done either event without the support of Safe Kids Oklahoma and Bethany Children's Health Center Thank you to everyone that was involved!!

Promoting Health and Wellness in Oklahoma elementary schools.
Healthy Schools Oklahoma(HSOK), a community-based nonprofit organization, has been recognized as a best-practice school health model for the state of Oklahoma. HSOK was developed in 1997 by the Oklahoma County Medical Society (OCMS) to promote and maintain healthy lifestyle choices among children, families and school faculty. The overall organizational goals are: 1) To build and maintain program infrastructure through extensive community collaborations; 2) To provide training, resources and support to schools; and 3) To evaluate and disseminate results. The founding partners of HSOK are Oklahoma County Medical Society and the Oklahoma City Public Schools. The program is endorsed by both the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
Using a comprehensive approach to school health, HSOK is a catalyst for improving the quantity and quality of health and physical education programs throughout the state of Oklahoma. HSOK currently promotes its mission in 60 elementary schools impacting 26 school districts located in 19 Oklahoma counties. It is estimated that the HSOK program will impact approximately 38,000 students, families and school faculty during the 2019-20 school year.
The HSOK project was funded in part by a grant from OSMA Foundation.
