The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) continues to monitor the progress of the COVID-19 pandemic and rapidly accumulating scientific information related to the virus. There continues to be an evolving understanding of the particular risks for otolaryngologists that must be included in the decision-making process for delivering patient care.
As of yesterday at 4 pm an updated recommendation was made to Otolaryngologists - Head and Neck Surgeons (ENT surgeons):
"Based on the most current compilation of information, the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery is recommending that all otolaryngologists limit providing patient care activities to those individuals with time-sensitive, urgent, and emergent medical conditions."
"This includes both office-based and surgical care. The Academy recognizes that “time sensitivity” and “urgency” is determined by individual physician judgment and must always take into account each individual patient’s medical condition, social circumstances, and needs."
Based on this recommendation and in the best interest of our staff, patients, and providers, we at Pediatric ENT of Oklahoma have decided to suspend all services that are deemed elective. We will limit patient care services to those children with time-sensitive, urgent, and emergent medical needs.
We support and agree with the notion that members of the medical community should unite and work with the general population and regulatory agencies to minimize the risk of the SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission from human to human in order to limit the development of new cases.
I want to sincerely thank you for your support and wish you and your children safety during this very difficult time for all of us.
Sincerely,
Robert Glade MD, FAAP
