This month we want to raise awareness about pet choking incidents. As Owners we can take proactive steps to help prevent potential choking hazards. Mission: Target Zero wants to reduce the already 200,00 choking incidents to 0. It is easy to avoid a costly veterinary bill and keep your pet safe. Know your pet and pick the appropriate size of toy or chew for your pet. There are plenty of other safe alternatives than bully sticks or rawhides that could potentially cause a trip to the vet. Don’t risk it, think about the choices you make for your pets.
National Pet Choking Prevention Day | June 22 June 22 is National Pet Choking Prevention Day, championed by Dr. Judy Morgan and Bow Wow Labs.
Got some Fuzzy Fridays this afternoon.
It’s normal for us in Vetmed to bring our pets to work but how does it work for everyone else? Please let us know below if you take your dog to work.
In German Dachshund means ‘Badger Dog’ and their history goes back 600 years. As their name suggests they were tasked to dig their way into a badger’s den and dispatch it, their low bodies were made for this work. Their loud bark helps their humans above ground to find their location. Selective breeding produced different types with wire coats for thorny briar patches and long hair for the colder climates. During World War I, American fanciers called them Liberty Hounds.
Today for Ugliest Dog Day we show love to those that aren’t considered conventionally adorable. Fun fact, The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is held annually in Petaluma, California.
Garfield launched on June 19, 1978. The cat Garfield (named after Jim Davis ’s grandfather) is the lead character. We were also introduced to Garfield’s owner, Jon Arbuckle and Jon’s dog, Odie. Set in Muncie, Indiana, common themes in the comic strip include Garfield’s laziness, obsessive eating, love for lasagna and coffee, and hatred of Mondays and diets. It holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip.
Today film enthusiasts and animals come together to appreciate our furry friends in cinema. Pets can be movie stars too but can also tell a story.
For Veterinary Appreciation Day we decided to have a little fun! Welcome all the new faces to Cherokee Hills Veterinary Hospital! With a special guest appearance from Dr. Lee. He is doing great and enjoying retirement.
Today is dedicated to recognizing and appreciating the hard work of veterinarians and their team. They keep our pets healthy and happy and are there when you need them. The work that they do isn’t always playing with puppies and kittens and we owe it to them to do the work some cannot. Thank your veterinarian and staff, be considerate of their time, it can get busy. We appreciate our clients and patients on the opposite end.

The Peruvian Inca Orchid’s story can be told through pottery and textiles. First appearing in Moche Pottery 750 AD, as well as Chimu, Chancay and Incan pottery. The Chancay people had these dogs as companions and their urine and f***s were believed to be used in medicines. The Chimu considered them good luck, using their warmth for the treatment of arthritis and respiratory conditions. Originally small dogs, conquerors interbred them with the foreigners’ dogs. The dogs were protected by the Andean people in the mountain but did not fair well in the cities along the coast.
In 1966 American, Jack Walkin brought these breeds from Peru and gave them the name Peruvian Inca Orchid. Peru’s Kennel Club accepted the breed and requested the name change to Perro sin Pelo de Peru (Peruvian Hairless Dog). In 2001 the breed was declared a National Patrimony and are protected in Peru.

Losing a pet is difficult no matter what. Everyone grieves and heals in their own way. If you would like, post some of your pets who have passed on in the comments and let’s all remember them together.
This June we would like to raise awareness of the benefits of fostering animals. National Foster Month reminds us that we can help pets in their transition to a permanent home. Fostering is important as it prevents overcrowding in shelters and can give pets a temporary home.
Celebrating National Foster a Pet Month and the Joy of Providing Tempo June is recognized as National Foster a Pet Month, a time to raise awareness about the significant role that fostering animals plays in the rescue ecosystem. The initiative, primarily aimed at alleviating the burden on shelters and rescues, encourages pet lovers across the nation to consider opening...

The month of June is National Adopt a Cat Month. During this month large litters of kittens usually end up in animal shelters. Many kittens join the many cats in shelters and impact the shelter in a few ways. We hope to find them their forever homes. If you want a cat, consider adopting from a shelter before taking in a stray cat. Cats are wonderful pets and are manageable if you have the time to put into them.
Adopt-A-Cat Month® American Humane celebrates Adopt-A-Cat Month® each June – a month that also marks the height of “kitten season,” when millions of kittens are born and often end up in animal shelters.
Yesterday was International Corgi Day! Recognizing both the Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgi’s. We covered Pembroke in the past so today we will talk about the Cardigan. If you have a wonderful corgi in your life share them below!
The Cardigan is the older of the two Welsh breeds. Named after the medieval kingdom Cardiganshire, Wales. Corgi, originally ‘kergie,’ is ancient Celtic for dog leading historians to surmise they were brough from Central Europe by the Celts, 3,000 years ago. Built low to the ground to avoid being hit and best nip at the heels of cattle. They did double duty, herding by day and flock guardian at night. Cardigans worked as an all-around farm dog, hunting partner, family protector and athlete.
The Greyhounds story starts in Egypt about 5,000 years ago. Hounds of the Pharaoh were designed to detect, chase, capture, and dispatch wildlife. The subjects of the pharaoh, the beauty of the dog was an extension to their ruler. Used for racing, the first event was in England 1876 on a straight track. Coursing, the Greyhounds chase a live Hare, is now banned in most countries. With the invention of the artificial hare in America 1912, the course became the modern oval shape.
If you are considering adopting a Greyhound, reach out to Hounds of the Heartland rescue!!!
Originally bred on the Shetland Islands North of Scotland. They were employed by farmers to herd sheep, ponies, and poultry. Shelties were bred to be smaller than their cousins, the Rough-Coated Collie, they eat less, and this is important considering the harsh climate of their homeland and the scarcity of food. Because the islands were inaccessible, Shelties lived in virtual isolation until the 20th Century.
Hello everyone, have a fun and happy Memorial Day. Look after your pets and make sure they stay away from human food and have a safe place from the loud noise and fireworks.
Charels II seemed more concerned with breeding Spaniels rather than ruling Britain. Toy Spaniels remained favorites of aristocrats into the early 19th century. The Marlborough family bred a line of red-and-whites, different from the favored tan and black, at Blenheim Palace. Later in the age of Victoria they crossed bred with Asian toys, Pugs and Japanese Chins, to what we in America call English Toy Spaniel, in the UK they are the King Charles Spaniel.
Fanciers of the 1920’s wanted to bring back the old-toy type spaniel from the past. Roswell Eldridge offered a cash prize to British Breeders who could produce “Blenheim Spaniels of the Old-World type.” These dogs became Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. The name Cavalier is a nod to the monarchist party that cost Charles I his head.

A fun thing we like to do around the clinic is hide Applejack, from My Little Pony, around the clinic. Whoever finds it gets to hide it themselves allowing the rest of us to find it! This time it is Megan's turn!! The longest Applejack has been hidden is about 8 months I believe.
