If you watch our YouTube channel, you may have noticed my ESEE-3 shows up in a lot of my videos.
If you spend enough time here in the shoppe you'll see me demonstrate it as the awesome sharpened pry bar that it can be more often than you might imagine.
Customer: So what is the benefit of being able to quietly cut briar vines?
Me: Well...I can't speak for anyone but myself, and it's not just briar vines.
But it in my work, and in my gathering of illustration images, it makes it easier to access the wild plants for more natural images if I can be minimally disruptive to the surrounding environment.
And it makes it a lot easier to get better wildlife images, if I can remove an occasional briar vine or limb that's causing me problems, without drawing so much attention to myself.
And also comes in handy if I am hunting with something other than a camera.
Customer: What is/are the advantage(s) of the hollow grind? In most bushcraft and survival groups people push full flat, convex, saber, or scandi grinds. But I never hear anyone mention a hollowgrind blade in a positive way.
Me: Well the nutshell answer is that survival, and by extension American "bushcraft" philosphies are by and large about force over finesse'.
The hollowgound field knife is for for fieldcraft. Which is more about finesse over force, and something that was once much more commonly taught here in America, in a simpler time when people possessed more knowledge of the wilderness and spent more time in it.
In my opinion, from my memories, before the 24/7 news cycle drove the fears that pushed the popularity of internet survival study forums. And the subject became more about how much abuse a tool could take than how well it performed as a knife, but I digress.
The hollowgrind blade has a thinner blade cross section for more of the blade height, as you can see in the illustration drawing.
Which means it can travel further into a substance; meat, wood, rope, vines, whatever before encountering the resistance of the wedge shape of the blade cross section.
And for some of us, who spend more time exploring the natural world studying the elements of the creation than we do beating our knives through things, it means we can easily flick-cut briars out of our way with a shorter lighter blade.
A blade that can put more pounds per square in a smaller space, and make more efficient use of inertia developed in less travel distance of shorter chopping strokes requiring less energy expense. As you can see in the illustration images.
So we can make less noise and disturb less of the world around us as we explore it.
It's berry seaon in the Tennessee Hills again, which also translates into Beary season. We're never alone in the woods here, even when we're exploring alone. It's a good idea to pay attention to our surroundings and maintain situational awareness.
The latest additions to our repertoire of survival related materials are books and bandanas on plant lore and plant identifications.
Which is really cool and also complementary to a current video project I'm doing on plant identification with some of the useful and dangerous plants in our environment here in our temperate rain forest.
This project will feature some of the Buck Knives we carry in the store as they were the knives I carried back in the 70s when my woodlore and herblore studies first began.
If the blade stock is thin enough, the scandinavian grind can serve well in a any number of wilderness skills. But where it really shines is in whittling carving and processing wood. It's excellent for fashioning tools and utensils and for firecraft.
To me one of the most important elements of Bushcraft is the relationship we develop with the bushes.
SOG Knives was once primarily known for their tactical knives, but they have definitely diversified their line over the years, getting into hunting and outdoor recreational knives as well
I just put in our Mora order. Along with the usual items, something cool this way comes!

I think few, if any, knife companies have put more thought and effort into producing tools for self-defense, self-reliance, or survival then Cold Steel has. Especially when it comes to working in urbanized terrain
Another happy prize winner!

Them: Why do you like serrations on some of your knives?
Me: Because when it really counts, when it really comes down to getting some things done, they help me save some of my most valuable possession, my time.
