The USA’s First Cadet World Champion Ever! Jonathan Yang (USA) doesn’t compete often but when he does he makes it count. At 55 kg, a weight down from his current category, he placed 7th at the 2023 edition of the cadet worlds and a few weeks later won a bronze medal at the continental championships.

This news is a month old, but we should always recognize when we lose one of our great teachers in the US. In this case it was Sensei Mamoru Shimamoto of New Jersey. Sensei Shimamoto was the teacher of the great Judo competitor Dr. Sandy North of Florida, and Dr. North wrote the bio that is on this link. Take a moment and read it.

A little late, but here is Part 1 of a series of videos highlighting MOJ's own Sensei Doug Clark's last visit to Japan, in 2019. This video shows Sensei Clark as an invited guest by his dear friend Sensei Teruyoshi Yamaguchi of Tokai University Judo to attend the 2019 Tokyo University Judo Championships at the famous Tokyo Budokan. Teams from all of the major universities in the greater Tokyo area compete for the championship. Many great up and coming Judo stars were at the championships, as well as the top coaches. Also Sensei Clark, who is also a black belt in Aikido, went to visit the Aikido Hombu Dojo...the headquarters for Aikido. After that he went again to the Tokyo Budokan to attend the 57th Annual Aikido Demonstration. Great memories!!!

Metro Orlando Judo Kai has had a great summer with many foreign visitors: 2 from Brazil, 2 from France, 1 from Colombia, 1 from Peru, and 3 from Germany ( 1 Junior from our brother club Judo TSB Ravensburg...David...and 2 from Judo TG 1886 Rimbach). Most recently we enjoyed having Hanna and her mother Tanja visiting us. Hanna was preparing for competing in the US Open Cadet category. As with all of our other guests, Tanja and Hanna were a delight to have at our club. This is Judo, building bridges of friendship with Judoka all over the world through Judo. Here Sensei Clark receives the club t-shirt from Judo TG 1886 Rimbach, and the other photo is of Hanna and her mother receiving a Metro Orlando Judo Kai t-shirt...thanks to the hard work of our shirt designer Rico!! Let's keep it going, more new students, and more new international friends! Thank you to all of our foreign guests who visited us over the last couple of months!
A nice video from NBC Olympics coverage about the Abe siblings. Abe Uta making one mistake and her 2024 dream of Olympic Gold was over. Her brother, Abe Hifumi, though went on to win gold in the mens 66kg category. Later, howeve,r as a result of the Mixed Team competition Uta and Hifumi got Olympic silver medals with their team members, and Uta chan got to win her one and only match in that event. For those old enough to remember the ABC sports program "Wild World of Sports" they opened their show saying that the athletes will have the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat". Well I think that is present in this story. But a real Judoka, and a real sports competitor, can never be great without knowing both ends of the spectrum...and Uta chan is great, and she will be back!

Tough day for my Japanese friends, but great day for my French friends. We can argue about penalties, referees, etc. But the reality is that France won with Teddy Riner throwing people to win. I was cheering for Japan, but Saito was thrown ( twice), Abe Hifumi was thrown, etc. Maybe the referees were bad, or biased, but you can't change the fact that these great athletes were thrown, and that they didn't win on some technicality. Hopefully team Japan will learn from the Olympic experience, the IJF will reevaluate some rules, and everyone will come back stronger...let's hope this for the success of Judo!
