What is golfer’s elbow?
Golfer’s elbow is the common term for medial epicondylitis, a condition that occurs due to small tears in the tendons that connect the forearm to the elbow. It causes pain and inflammation centered on the bony bump on the elbow, pain can often radiate to the rest of the forearm.
Like tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow is a form of elbow tendinitis that is the result of repetitive swinging or gripping motion. Tennis elbow affects the inside of the elbow, while patients with golfer’s elbow have discomfort on the outside of the elbow. However, neither of these conditions are exclusive to the sport for which they are named. Tennis players can and do experience golf elbow, as does anyone else who engages in repetitive hand, wrist, or forearm motion.
In fact, golfer’s elbow sometimes goes by the name “pitcher’s elbow,” as baseball pitchers are at high risk of developing the condition. People who frequently bowl, rake, use screwdrivers or hammers, or paint are also at risk.
Golfer’s elbow symptoms-
Symptoms tend to develop slowly, especially in cases of overuse, and can range from mild to severe. The bony bump on the elbow is usually the location of the pain, but it can extend along the inside of the forearm to the wrist. Often the elbow feels stiff and it’s difficult to move the arm or make a fist.
You may experience weakness, numbness, or tingling in the hands, wrists, or fingers. Usually worsen with certain movements, such as swinging a golf club or using a screwdriver.
What causes golfer’s elbow?
Golfer’s elbow is a result of repeated or one-time damage to the muscles and tendons that connect the elbow to the wrist. The most common cause of golfer’s elbow is chronic overuse, which can cause repeated stress on the tendons that may result in small tears.
While the name may lead patients to believe that golf is the only cause of the condition, a number of sports, occupations, and activities can cause medial epicondylitis. Including tennis, baseball, archery, football, weightlifting, construction, plumbing, and carpentry. Any activity that places chronic stress on the elbow or wrist can place you at risk of developing golfer’s elbow.
Therapy for golfer’s elbow-
Rest, stretching, and strengthening is the best prevention against golfer’s elbow. Once it is at a point where you can no longer preform your desired activity our therapists are able to help alleviate pain, check for which muscles are too weak or too strong and create balance. We can assist in restoring wrist flexion and extension, forearm pronation and supination, and elbow flexion and extension. Getting you back to your activity and helping to prevent reoccurrence.
What is an ankle injury?
Three bones, the tibia, fibula of the lower leg, and the talus in the foot. They all meet at the ankle, held together by ligaments and attached to muscles by tendons. Ankle injuries typically fall into three categories, sprains (ligaments), breaks (bones), and strains (tendons and muscles),
A sprain, is when the ligaments are stretched or torn. A break occurs when one or more of the bones in the ankle are broken. If the ankle is strained, it means there has been damage to the muscles or tendons as a result of being stretched beyond their capable range of motion.
Ankle injuries symptoms-
The symptom of strain, sprain, or break can be identical, especially when the injury first occurs. The first signs of any ankle injury are pain and difficulty putting weight on the injured ankle. Often a medical professional is consulted to identify exactly what type of injury the ankle has sustained.
Sprains and strains both have levels of severity. Mild strains result when a ligament is overstretched. Moderate sprains result from a partial tear. With a severe sprain, the ligament tears completely or separates from the bone. Both moderate and severe sprains can make the ankle joint unstable, and all types of sprains cause pain, swelling, bruising, and inflammation.
Mild strains are caused by overstretching. Moderate and severe strains can both result in loss of muscle function. With a moderate strain, the muscle or tendon is torn partially, while with a severe strain, it may be completely ruptured. With any strain, patients can experience pain, muscle spasms, muscle weakness, swelling, and inflammation.
Breaks and fractures should be seen by a medical professional immediately. While a broken bone will cause pain and instability in the ankle (much like sprains and strains), it may also cause numbness, poor circulation, or bone deformation.
What causes ankle injuries?
Ankle injury usually occurs because the ankle joint has been twisted too far out of its normal alignment. Half of all of these injuries are the result of sports activities, although we do see where high-heeled shoes or an uneven floor has created the injury. Any time the foot and ankle are suddenly forced into an unnatural position, there is a risk of injuring the ankle.
Other common causes of ankle injuries include twisting, rotating, or rolling the ankle, tripping or falling, an awkward landing after a jump or step, or a sudden impact such as a car or bicycle crash.
Therapy for ankle injuries-
An ankle injury can increase the risk of re-injury to as much as 70%, so it’s important when you have injured your ankle to work with our therapists to release and strengthen the joint which decreases the risk of re-injury. Our therapists will assist the ankle in strengthening and recovering.
Working to restore proper movement including- Dorsiflexion (bending the ankle up towards the shin), Plantar flexion (pointing the toe and ankle down), Inversions (pointing the ankle inwards), and Eversions (pointing the ankle outwards). We are able to sped up the healing in the ankle with these movements. We often see a fairly quick recovery and return to activity.
Toe walking
Toe Walking is defined as the failure of the heel to contact the floor at the onset of stance during the gait cycle, resulting in a bilateral toe to toe gait. These children may also have decreased balance and coordination, or may fall frequently. By restoring the calf muscles and Achilles tendons, as well as addressing the problems in the foot itself we are able to help Restore Range of Motion and functionality resulting in improvement the child’s foot structure. This allows for the gait to be restored to normal.
Much like the foundation of a house, our feet provide important structural support that we often take for granted. Untreated foot problems like pes planus—commonly known as flat feet—can cause a compounding stress response such as shin splints and problems in the knees, hips and back. Pes planus is a postural deformity where the medial longitudinal arch collapses or flattens. This can be a result of either hereditary or daily life factors.
Flat feet combined with weight-bearing activities can lead to foot deformities and bone stress injuries.
Our therapists can effectively treat this condition of over pronation.
Some are born with bone abnormalities in the foot that may cause pes planus, others develop the condition due to poor posture or footwear, nerve lesions causing muscle weakness or paralysis, or a loss of active or passive support during dynamic weight-bearing activities.
When arch stabilizers like the tibialis posterior muscle weaken, weight and downward force gradually flattens the foot to the ground.
The aging process also causes the foot ligaments to slack and as the joints to shift, may eventually result in fallen arches.
While some people with pes planus may suffer with pain and dysfunction, others may have minimal pain and therefore don’t seek help.
Our therapists can visibly observe pes planus in our client’s posture and stance with hypermobility of the medial arch.
Other symptoms include pain in the plantar surface, lengthened and weakened intrinsic muscles of the foot, and shortened peroneal muscles.

Our feet, we shove them into shoes, pound them into the pavement. Usually neglected, they hold the weight of our bodies.
The nerve endings in our feet are linked to internal organs and systems across the body.
Mario is highly skilled in working on foot conditions, restoring the functionality and reliving the symptoms it has caused throughout the body.
We take so many steps we take in a single day, which is great for our heath but if our feet are not making correct impact with the ground it can become a source of pain.
We have 52 bones, 66 joints, 214 ligaments and 38 muscles that propel us through our daily lives. Whether just walking for our daily tasks or getting in a run for exercise, understanding the unique set of actions and reactions our feet perform while in motion can help prevent injury and make our lives less painful.
What is Pronation?
Pronation refers to the natural inward roll of the foot. Everyone pronates to some degree when walking or running. This is part of the body’s shock absorption system. Upon initial contact with the ground, the heel rolls inward to distribute the force of impact through the remaining gait cycle up to when pushing off from the front of the foot. The degree of how much of a roll occurs determines whether overpronation or underpronation is present.
Overpronation:
When the outside of the heel makes ground contact, the foot rolls inward more than the ideal 15% of normal pronation, thus making it more difficult for the foot and ankle to stabilize the rest of the body resulting in shock not being absorbed as efficiently.
Effects of Excessive Overpronating:
Because the foot doesn’t evenly absorb the shock of your stride, it instead passes that unintended shock on to your legs, knees, hips, and spine creating injuries such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, medial knee pain, and stress fractures to the big toe. Those with flat feet are more commonly overpronated. Because the arches can't fully support your step, the foot rolls too far inward, twisting your foot, leg, and knee and forcing your body out of proper alignment.
Underpronation/ Supination:
People with underpronation are subjected to foot and other lower body injuries. With underpronation, the body weight remains on the outside of the foot as it passes though the gait cycle, distributing more weight along the outside of the foot and pushing the anklebone out. The smaller toes must do most of the work during push-off, causing decreased efficiency when walking and running.
Effects of Excessive Underpronation:
Strain on the ankle muscles and tendons and a decrease in ankle flexibility are some of the common symptoms. Those with high arches and tight Achilles tendons are more known to supinate.
Not sure what type of arches you have? Performing a “wet test” will give you a general idea.
1) Place some water in a shallow pan, 2) Wet the sole of your foot
3) step directly on a brown shopping bag or heavy piece of paper.
The footprint left on the paper will illustrate your foot type.
Another way to have an idea is by the wear patterns on the bottom of your walking or running shoes. Excessive wear along the big toe and inside arch indicates overpronation, while wear along the outside edge of the shoe indicates underpronation.
The most definitive way to assess your pronation pattern is through a professional you may have even already been told by your podiatrist. Our therapists are able to determine and help to correct the cause of pronation or supination of the foot as well as help the effects it has had on your body and posture. Once corrected you can maintain strength and flexibility in the feet and lower legs to help prevent repetitive use injuries.
Wearing shoes that elevate the heal is the leading causes of several foot problems. We have outlined a few of the most prevalent below.
Forefoot injuries- Instead of dispersing body weight evenly across the foot, heels place all of the body weight on the ball of the foot. This places extreme pressure on the ends of the metatarsal bones and the joints between the toes and feet, increasing the risk of stress fractures and neuromas.
Arch strain- The unnatural position of a elevated heel strains the arch of the foot so that the foot is always pointing downward. Over time, this can make it impossible for the wearer to walk or stand barefooted without pain.
Heel pain- The pressure on the back of the heel bone can cause Haglund’s deformity, a bony growth, also known as a “pump bump.” The daily wearing of heels can also cause the Achilles tendon to shorten, increasing the risk of plantar fasciitis.
Toe injuries- Shoes with a pointed toe force the toes into an unnatural V shape, causing foot deformities such as hammertoes, bunions, and ingrown toenails.
Sprained ankles- The awkward positioning of the foot inside the shoe can make it difficult to walk normally and throw off your balance. If your foot goes numb or your heel becomes stuck, your weight might shift sideways, twisting your ankle.
Posture and gait problems- heels don’t just alter the way your foot functions; it can affect the body mechanics of how you walk, stand, and carry your weight. The damage to your posture can place undue stress on the knees, hips, and lower back, causing pain and complications throughout the body.
Six Degrees therapists can help manage the pain or even reverse the condition. We can create a plan to allow the foot to return to normal functionality.
Our feet carry us through life. We usually don’t take that great of care of them, we just keep going.
When we treat the feet, it helps release tension in the body and improve circulation.
Our feet have around 7,000 nerve endings that all correspond to other specific areas of the body, including organs and the spine. By working on these nerve endings, we can improve blood, lymph and nerve flow to these specific areas.
Some of the alimentary issues that can be alleviated through working on the foot are seen through the connections to the body in this photo.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome causes extreme tiredness or fatigue that does not improve with sleep.
Chronic Fatigue symptoms intensify after physical exertion. That is why people with CFS are forced into lower levels of activity.
The 10 most common chronic fatigue symptoms include:
* fatigue that last 6+ months
* extreme exhaustion after physical or mental exercise
* headaches
* muscle ache
* attention & memory loss problems
* joint pain
* sore throat
* tender lymph nodes
* sleep that is not refreshing
* dizziness that worsens when moving from lying down or sitting to standing
Diagnosing CFS is difficult for many physicians. Doctors do not have access to reliable testing for the disease. And symptoms are similar to other conditions. Therefore, chronic fatigue syndrome is often left untreated.
The CDC states that 90 percent of people with CFS have not been diagnosed. This is because there isn’t a simple test for the condition. This leaves most people not diagnosed. There is hope though, our structural therapist are able to greatly reduce and often even eliminate both the symptoms and even the cause of CFS. We see amazing results with so many clients and it has been life changing for them.

Our practice desires to help the community, we have a passion for working with youth athletes to ensure they are preforming at their top level while protecting their bodies from injury. We understand the strain and high demands young players are asking from their bodies, and without proper care the damage that can occur. Resulting in loss of playing time, and the physical along with mental toll that being injured causes to the player and team. We have modalities that coincide with what you want for your players, which is for them to be both heathy and knowledgeable. We believe an athlete that understands why they are stretching and how to properly do so, how their body functions when playing their sport, and the benefits they will see both short and long term from preventive care are invaluable. Our clients in youth sports receive discounted rates on sessions. We tailor treatments to their sport and give utmost importance to addressing any of their concerns and what can be done to both prevent injury and fix any current problems.

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of foot pain. The diagnosis is slightly misleading, plantar refers to the bottom of the foot and itis is simply inflammation. So you have swelling of the bottom of the foot. However, the foot is rarely the source of the problem. We often find the soleus muscle to be the trigger. Our treatment helps to release facial tightness alleviating the constructions to the nerve that runs down to the heel. Then correcting the overall structure eliminating the pressure to the nerve that is causing the irritation. 6° of Wellness has found great success in preventing the need for the drastic measures that many medical fields recommend as the only treatment options.

Why Do We Need Body Balance?
Why does a car need to be aligned? Why is it that architects and contractors go to great lengths to make sure a building is plumb and that it has a level foundation?
n both cases the alignment, or BALANCE, is essential to the "health," or longevity of the car and building. Can a car run without being aligned? Of course, but tires will wear unevenly and components will have added stress and wear out. Will a building stand without being balanced? Of course, but over time without a level foundation certain walls will crack and eventually the building will fall.
So then, why do we as people need balance? Unlike the car and building we are living creatures, but we are still under the same physical stresses as they are. When the body's core, the spine, is not balanced, then the weight of the body is unequally distributed to certain parts of the body making them wear out prematurely.
In the short term, you may have pain, tension, or dysfunction. Over time, prolonged body imbalance can cause joint degeneration, fatigue, disc problems, nerve conditions, or chronic pain. Look at the picture to the right and then take a look at yourself in the mirror to see if you have any of these warning signs of body imbalance!
Our 6° therapists are skilled at assessing where the body has imbalance and will create a plan to restore your structure.
Our Six Degrees of Wellness therapists help to restore homeostasis or balance in the body between the nervous system and sets of muscles that may have become over- or under-worked due to stress, illness, repetitive use, injury or surgery.

Musculoskeletal pain is often caused by the way the body opposes gravity inefficiently, meaning, the body weight has shifted off the bones and onto the muscles. Pain is caused by the gravitational forces being continually and inappropriately applied to the body and the way their body opposes it.
It is muscles taking over the function of bones and a constant fight with gravity causing some or many muscles to tighten so much they actually feel as hard as bones.
This body shifting, altering and compensation, with accompanying chronic, musculofascial tension, often leads to a constant barrage of trigger point formation, referral of pain to distant areas, deviations (unevenness) in leg lengths, distortions in the pelvis and spine (misalignments), and depressed or elevated shoulder girdles.
These distortions cause the common downward stooped & collapsed posture and forward head positioning.
Six Degrees of Wellness structural therapists can find the source and correct these distortions.
What They Didn't Tell You About Your Knee Pain
When you have knee pain, most doctors and physicians will prescribe drugs or surgery. If you take your knee pain to a conventional therapist, they are trained to apply the one-size-fits-all protocols, tape and braces. Maybe when you tell them about your knee pain the recommendation is endless visits for manipulation. Or perhaps when faced with knee pain, they will massage the area to get the muscles to relax. These approaches are all designed to relieve the knee pain, but do not address the cause of the pain. And thereby committing you to repeat visits forever for the alleviation of pain.
Unlike those approaches we use our skills and modalities to address the root cause of the symptoms. We actually take all of the factors effecting knee function into account. Each session we are assessing and creating a plan specific to meet your individual needs as your body changes with every treatment. This is why our patients return to play, work, walking and all of their normal activities quickly without need for medication to mask pain or endless treatments working on the exact same aliment.
Therapy for Knee Pain
Knee pain can be caused by several factors, manifest as several different symptoms and ultimately lead to loss of functional abilities. Knee injuries can happen in sports, recreational activities, slips and falls, auto accidents, or just from overuse. Here is a look at a few of the most common knee issues we see:
* Patellofemoral Pain
* Meniscal tears
* Contusions
* Ligament strains and sprains
* Osteoarthritis
* ACL injuries
* tendonitis
* Bursitis
* Patellar tracking disorder
If you are experiencing knee pain we can help you get back in the game of life, go online or call and schedule and appointment and let us show you how Six Degrees of Wellness is the opposite of everything you've tried or been told before.
Whether you play soccer, basketball, lacrosse, baseball or volleyball, our therapists can help to restore optimal function back to your team sport activities.
Team sport injuries are commonplace, and you've likely been disappointed with other solutions. We know that dealing with pain while playing, or being sidelined all together, has a major impact on an athlete - physically, emotionally and sometimes financially. At Six Degrees of Wellness our goal is to get you back in the game ASAP. With our extensive knowledge we can help you break through the pain, the discomfort, and the cycle of ineffective "sports rehab" techniques. Our approach can have you moving with more function and feeling less pain in fewer sessions.
No matter the level of competition, from youth leagues to a professional athlete, our treatments are created with your personal needs and abilities at the forefront. Our sports clients are continuously surprised when our unique approach delivers faster and longer lasting effects than the treatments they've become accustomed to. We don't focus on just the pain in just the area it's manifesting now. Our treatment isn't for the symptom of pain. It is to solve the problem of decreased function and find what other muscles are contributing. By doing this we eliminate the treatment for your symptoms and plan a course to movement and utilizing your full ability. Every session is designed to uncover the cause of your discomfort, injury, or limits in function and get your muscles firing together again so that you can get back to playing your sport.
Common Injuries-
From baseball and soccer to football and lacrosse. From volleyball and softball to rowing and basketball. In team sports there is an elevated risk of bruising or contusion from impact with other players, but many of the other injuries are similar to running injuries, football injuries and even cross-training injuries. These include sprains (stretched or torn ligament), strains (torn or pulled muscles and tendons) and fractures (breaks in the bone). Many of these have unique names because they're common to a sport - like turf toe, golfer's elbow, tennis elbow, jumper's knee and runner's knee. Whether your injury is common and has a name with a diagnosis, or it's uncommon, our therapists will evaluate and restore function in the whole body to get everything back to optimal performance.
Six Degrees of Wellness Neuromuscular Therapy Sessions get you back in the game.
Six Degrees of Wellness seeks to eliminate pain, chronic or acute, by addressing key elements that cause pain:
Ischemia: the lack of blood flow to soft tissues that causes hypersensitivity to touch.
Trigger points: highly irritated points in muscles that refer pain to other parts of the body.
Nerve entrapment/compression: pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone.
Postural distortions: imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes. Longtime poor postural habits are the most common cause of pain from this element.
Biomechanical dysfunction: imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, computer keyboarding, bad mechanics in a golf swing or tennis stroke).
Fascia-Related Pain and Stiffness
Fascia holds your body and muscles together, which allows them to contract and stretch. Fascia becomes like a cast impeding the muscle due to a lifestyle of limited physical activity. Repetitive movement that overworks one part of the body. Trauma such as surgery or injury.
6° vs Insurance
Six Degrees Of Wellness is an Alternative to insurance. We Integrate with other forms of medicine but our approach doesn’t follow the path that insurance takes. Our primary focus is detecting the problem. Pain is a result of the body accommodating to deal with compounding traumas and fighting against the force of gravity.
We live in a 3 dimensional world with three plains that must perfectly align against gravity. Once a section of your body is misaligned the rest of your body has to compensate. This takes the option of being in perfect alignment off the table. For example the knee must rotate to compensate for a vertebra that rotated for the purpose of protecting an injured shoulder. The pain you feel is a result of the body accommodating to deal with compounding traumas from an impingement or compression of a nerve caused by a misalign body against the force of gravity. The knee is a hinge joint that does not like to rotate, but now it is forced into rotation to compensate against gravity and carry the weight of the body as its attempting to maintain functional movement. (Sounds like a lot of stress for your knee.)
The knee is not the main problem and not the body's only issue, nor will treating it alone remedy the actual problem. In most cases fixing only the knee will lead to greater problems throughout the body. The real issue is based in that shoulder area which your knee is taking the load for. Insurance works with doctors following a distinct path which will not lead to figuring this out. Insurance only hears that you have knee pain and they pay their contracted professionals to fix it. The problem starts and stops with the knee for them. To us, the knee is the symptom. The pain you feel is the symptom of a stressed out knee due to accumulated compensations that began with a forward shoulder. When the rotation of the shoulders is taken care of this takes the pressure off the knee, allowing it to begin lining up by itself or with a little extra help from us. Here at Six Degrees Of Wellness we provide what insurance can’t, and that is traveling down a path that points to long term solutions not just temporary treating symptoms.
