Meet Katie Unverferth-Smith in this week's Scramble Committee Member ! 🏌️‍♀️⛳

The Jim Unverferth Memorial OHCA District III Celebrity Golf Scramble is a longstanding tradition that not only benefits The Educational Foundation of Ohio Health Care Association, funding dozens of scholarships annually, it’s also the perfect opportunity to get to know some of the Committee Members who support the HCF Family of Companies on and off the course.

As a golfer at the Scramble for ten years alongside her cousin, Kendra Unverferth, before joining the Golf Scramble Committee in 2019, Katie Unverferth-Smith is one of those people.

We took some time to ask Katie a few questions about the Scramble and here’s what she shared for her Spotlight!

What are your hopes for the winners of this year’s OHCA 2023 Scholarship Program as they begin their paths to careers in long term care?
My hopes would be each winner engages and completely buys into their career paths and uses the scholarships to enhance their lives along with the many others they will be caring for in long-term care facilities over the years.

What words would you use to describe this year's event?
Exciting! Epic! Lasting Tradition!

Why is this event important to you, its sponsors and the long-term care community?
Before officially being involved as a committee member, this event has held a spot near and dear to my heart. My Uncle Jim was always very passionate about this event, so he would get as many people involved to support the event as possible and hit people up for tickets, donations, golfers, etc. Years before transforming Country Acres into Moose Landing, my cousin Kendra (Jim’s daughter) would recruit me and some other girls to golf in the event, and from year one of participating in the event, it was evident how much this event meant to Jim and the entire OHCA community. It is an amazing fundraising event that promotes the enhancement of the long-term care community as a whole.

Thank you, Katie, for your unwavering commitment to providing excellent long-term care, and to the HCF Family of Companies, our Residents, and the Golf Scramble.

Meet Sophia Loser in this week's Scramble Committee Member ! 🏌️‍♀️⛳️

Involved with the Jim Unverferth Memorial OHCA District III Celebrity Golf Scramble since 2020, Sophia Loser is one of those people.

We took some time to ask Sophia a few questions about the Scramble and here’s what she shared for her Spotlight!

What are your hopes for the winners of this year’s OHCA 2023 Scholarship Program as they begin their paths to careers in long term care?
My hope for this year’s recipients is that they have the feeling of fulfillment. The scholarship assistance they receive will help them to complete their education and to be in a position that gives them a sense of accomplishment in their career path in long-term care.

What words would you use to describe this year's event?
Fun! Collaborative! Charity! Exciting! Fulfilling!

Why is this event important to you, its sponsors and the long-term care community?
I feel it is important to bring attention to the long-term care communities (i.e., skilled nursing facilities, assisted livings, home care, hospice, & beyond). I feel this event assists our sponsors and the community to know that we want to continue to build and support those in the field with opportunities of growth.

Thank you, Sophia, for your unwavering commitment to providing excellent long-term care, and to the HCF Family of Companies, our Residents, and the Golf Scramble.

Meet Penny Bercaw, honoree of the Penny Bercaw Premier Scholarship in this week's Scramble Committee Member ! 🏌️‍♀️⛳️

Beginning her work for HCF Management, Inc. 34 years ago as Secretary to Operations and Human Resources at the Ft. Amanda Road location, Penny Bercaw is one of those people. A few years into this role, development was added to her assisting responsibilities before Penny was promoted to Executive Assistant in 1996. Penny continued to assist company president Jim Unverferth long after HCF moved to our current offices on Shawnee Road in 1998 before assisting current president, and Jim's daughter, Kerri Romes.

This year's Golf Scramble is an especially important event for Penny, as it coincides with her retirement from HCF Management, Inc., having devoted 34 years building an incredible career in the long-term care community. To celebrate and honor Penny this year, and for Scrambles to come, the Penny Bercaw Premier Scholarship has been established in her name.

We took some time to ask Penny a few questions about the Scramble and her career with HCF Management, Inc. and here’s what she shared for her Spotlight!

What is one of your fondest memories of your time at HCF?
When I became Jim's Assistant, some were concerned about two redheads working together. Jim said, 'Don't worry about that, we will be just fine.' I enjoyed the years we were challenged by some Pennsylvania facilities to a softball game. Eventually Shawnee, Lima, and Roselawn Manors challenged the Corporate Office to a game of softball as well -fun times!

How would you describe the annual OHCA District III Celebrity Golf Scramble?
It is like a family reunion. Some celebrities and vendors have attended and participated almost every year. It's always great to see everyone. It has definitely gotten bigger and better.

What are your hopes for the winner of the first Penny Bercaw Premier Scholarship as they begin their path to a career in long term care?
That this scholarship helps them pursue their desired career and to live life to the fullest.

Why is this event important to you, its sponsors, HCF Management, Inc., and the long-term care community?
These scholarships help individuals who are interested in a health care degree in the State of Ohio - nurses, therapists, dietitians, pharmacists, etc. The Educational Foundation of Ohio Health Care Association District III will award 29 scholarships this year. It is a great way to build comradery amongst Corporate Office staff, facility staff, vendors and community golfers. It is a great team-building event.

Having announced your retirement next month, what do you think you will miss most about working at HCF?
Most definitely my great group of co-workers!

Thank you, Penny, for your unwavering commitment to providing excellent long-term care, and to the HCF Family of Companies, our Residents, and the Golf Scramble for the past 34 years. We hope you enjoy your well-deserved retirement and time with your husband, Chris, sons Benjamin & Nicholas, family and friends.

"When I think about work-life balance, I don't imagine it as a perfect day where I got to spend the exact right amount of time having an impact at work and snuggling with my kids at home. I never achieve that. But over the course of a month, or a quarter, or a year, I try to make time for the people and experiences I value."

Scramble Volunteer since 2007 and currently enjoying her first year on the Committee, Carrie Karhoff is one of those people.

We took some time to ask Carrie a few questions about the Scramble and here’s what she shared for her Spotlight!

What are your hopes for the winners of this year’s OHCA 2023 Scholarship Program as they begin their paths to careers in long term care?
To get the education needed that will lead to a long and fulfilling career in long-term care.

What words would you use to describe this year's event?
Tradition, Fellowship, Enjoyable & Exciting!

Why is this event important to you, its sponsors and the long-term care community?
This event is important as it is a representation of when you all work together, good things can happen. A good and successful event in turn raises the monies needed for EFOHCA to be able to provide scholarships to those wanting to advance their careers in long-term care. In an industry that has seen staffing struggles, the need for long-term care individuals is in demand.

Thank you, Carrie, for your unwavering commitment to providing excellent long-term care, and to the HCF Family of Companies, our Residents, and the Golf Scramble.

Congratulations to our very own Jodi McCabe Bennett, winner of the EncompassCare 'Gone Golfing' Gift Basket and Business Office Support Specialist for HCF Management, Inc.!

When the winner of the contest turned out to be one of our own, we couldn't miss the chance to highlight Jodi and the importance of her work here at HCF Management, Inc.

After seven years as an Accounts Receivable Specialist, Jodi was promoted to Business Office Support Specialist in 2012. Described as hard-working, fun & committed, Jodi is responsible for training Business Office Managers that work at our various facilities, offering them continued guidance during the admissions process and beyond. Her role extends beyond diligently onboarding new staff, as she handles all Collections Accounts with our attorneys in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

While Jodi is yet to attend a Jim Unverferth Memorial OHCA District II Celebrity Golf Scramble, she remembers our late company president as the most caring individual. She describes Jim as always leaving an impression on those around him, as he always remembered people's names, even if he had only met them once.

Jodi is looking forwarded to next month, noting that she finds it amusing to see Kevan Unverferth's daring wardrobe choices at the Scramble throughout the years!

Congratulations, Jodi, and thank you for your commitment to HCF Management, Inc. and our work in long-term care.
