As a property owner and daughter, I have protested my taxes and my parents’ quite a few times successfully.

This year, with home prices declining across the board, it might be worth your while to protest your property taxes.

County is stating differently in their news media story, however in many areas properties have been valued and sold for much less than anticipated recently.

Consult with a real estate attorney to write you a simple one page letter or write your own protest letter. You have to pay your taxes “in protest” to avoid penalties, but you can present evidence supporting your protest.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

• The price should reflect home prices from January 2023 - today.

• If you have recently purchased a home which reflects a lower value, simply send a copy of your settlement statement with your protest.

• Include comparable properties that are valued for less in your neighborhood.
