Three moves for better spine health - Harvard Health 08/29/2020

Here are three simple exercises that are excellent for the Low back, courtesy of Harvard Health in Boston. Some other things you can do to help with chronic back pain:

1. STOP SMOKING!! To***co smoke (and maybe all smoke) is bad for the circulation and blood flow in the disks and vertebrae, just like it is for your lungs and heart. Poor circulation means faster aging of the tissues with more bulging and degeneration fof disks, and more degenerative changes of the vertebrae that leads to pinched nerves.
2. Get up and walk! Prolonged sitting is bad for you!
3. Gentle exercise and stretching daily is good for your spine! The exercises below are a bare minimum!
4. Eat well to stay well!
5. Sleep well at night! Make sure your mattress and pillows provide good support and alignment so you can rest!! I have found that a memory foam mattress is helpful but there are excellent air or water based alternatives and many hybrid mattresses available too. They dont need to cost thousands...

Great visit to AUGMEDICS new Headquarters facility in Arlington Hts IL for a socially distanced visit and lab!! Amazing emergent technology for Augmented Reality in Spine Surgery!! I was welcomed by (L to R) Scott Finger VP Sales, Monica Kuhnert Director of Commercialization, (me - the bald guy in the middle), my old friend Adam Krzeczowski Area Sales Manager and Tim Murawski, President and Chief Commercial Officer.

Using images from an intraoperative “spin” with CT, O-Arm or 3D C-Arm (here I used the new Siemens CIOS Spin), I was easily able to navigate in the spine using their XVISION AR Headset and workstation. This system has its own Navigation software and the cost to entry is surprisingly affordable!! Kudos to CEO Nissan Elimelech and the team!!

Nick Theodore MD at Johns Hopkins is one of the national leaders in Robotic Spine Surgery. Here he is using the Excelsius Spine Robot from Globus which he helped design. I endorse his interest in the role of psychologic factors in chronic pain...every minute of every day the mind influences the body. There is NO health without Mental Health...

Improving Neurosurgical Outcomes Through Mental Health By involving a rehabilitation psychologist and an expert on decreasing opioid use in patient care, the spine team aims to bolster the patient experience before and after surgery.
