A team of JCCC Honors and PTK students was one of 12 to advance to the finals of the Community College Innovation Challenge (CCIC), a national competition held virtually June 14-17. They developed a novel solution to address the lack of accessibility to personal travel for mobility device users, such as those who use wheelchairs. Many rely on the assistance of another person to help them gain access to their device from their vehicle. The team wanted to create a way for these individuals to travel independently. Although the JCCC team did not place among the top three, each participant received a cash prize of $500.
The Team: Kate Boyer, Ashley ("Kat") Hooley Lickteig, Jacqueline Contreras, Jacquelyn White and mentor Tara Karaim
Juneteenth is known as the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and is used to celebrate African American's culture and achievements.. The day's name is a combination of "June," and "nineteenth" in honor of the date Major Granger's announcement was made that the Civil War had ended and everyone enslaved was free.

Read “Kansas Stars: Contributions to Space Science” a fantastic article written by Honors student Maci Branch. This article pays homage to space explorers who are based in Kansas. This article serves as inspiration for young Kansans who may aspire to explore the skies! Here is a comment from the author, “Space Science is promoting the biographical information that will be included on the Kansas Cosmos app. The stars are the men and women working in space exploration who have called Kansas home at one time or another. The sonnet in this post harnesses this creative energy by its title winking at a song by the rock band Kansas.” (Maci Branch, 2021)
The Senate unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The legislation has gained momentum since the massive Black Lives Matter protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd last year and the Democrats' takeover of the White House and Congress.
