A Sharp Park resident since 1956, Shirlee has helped her Pacifica community since day one. She is quite a story. But as far as Shirlee is concerned, the biggest takeaway in her biography is finding the donations needed to save Pacifica's Ocean Shore RR passenger car, Car 1409. Did you know a famous silent film star lived part-time on Pedro Point, in a cottage she had built a short walk from the Ocean Shore Railroad station? That's one of the fascinating tidbits of silent film history presented by the Pacifica Historical Society on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Pacifica Coastside Museum.

Two experts on silent movies, David Kiehn and Rena Azevedo Kiehn, will discuss film productions in the East Bay and in San Mateo County -- and the actors who were famous in their day.

Kiehn is the historian and film preservationist for the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, located at the Edison Theater in Niles, a district of Fremont. He also is the author of Broncho Billy and the Essanay Film Company.

In 2010, he appeared on CBS’ 60 Minutes after he discovered "A Trip Down Market Street", an awe-inspiring film of a San Francisco streetcar, shot only four days before the 1906 earthquake.

Rena Azevedo Kiehn is the Niles museum’s public relations and special programs director and also a founding member of the museum. Rena grew up in Linda Mar, graduated from Terra Nova and is the daughter of the late Paul and Lydia Azevedo, who were active in Pacifica organizations. Paul was a longtime Tribune columnist who often wrote about local history.

The Kiehns will touch on the career of Evelyn Selbie, a leading lady of the silent film era. Selbie was a part-time Pedro Point resident in the 1910s when investors of the Ocean Shore Railroad lured residents to their planned coastal development. She was one of the first to build herself a cottage on the subdivided lots, a short walk from the railroad station.

Admission is free to the event at the Pacifica Coastside Museum, 1850 Francisco Blvd. and no RSVPs required.
