Boat traffic restored on Lower Cumberland River

PADUCAH, Ky. (December 4, 2023) – A demolition contractor has completed efforts to cut up and remove sections of the steel truss of the Old Smithland Bridge from the Cumberland River. The truss of the 92-year-old structure was dropped into the river by explosive demolition on Thursday.

Work to clear the river was completed this morning. The U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have completed a sonar scan of the river at the site and determined that the Cumberland River can reopen to boat traffic at navigation mile point 2.7.

One small section of the steel truss remained on the riverbank to be taken apart by land-based demolition equipment.

Removal of the truss has also allowed the New U.S. 60 Cumberland River "Smithland" Bridge to return to normal traffic flow.

Two additional blasts are planned to take down remnants of the old bridge, including the concrete piers and concrete abutments. Weather permitting, the next blast would be around Dec. 15.

The Old U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge, also known as the Lucy Jefferson Lewis Memorial Bridge and the Smithland Bridge, is at Cumberland River navigation mile point 2.7. The 92-year-old 1,817 ft. structure with a 500 ft. main truss span opened to traffic in 1931.

UPDATE: New U.S. 60 Cumberland River "Smithland" Bridge Restricted to One Lane to Noon on Monday, Dec. 4

Demolition on Old Smithland Bridge continues

PADUCAH, Ky. (December 3, 2023) – A demolition contractor continues efforts to cut up and remove sections of the steel truss of the Old Smithland Bridge from the Cumberland River. The truss of the 92 year old structure was dropped into the river by explosive demolition on Thursday.

While work to complete demolition and removal of the approach spans has been progressing, a mechanical issue with the barge that supports a crane being used to retrieve sections of the truss slowed the water portion of the work.

Today, all but one of the sections was retrieved and moved out of the river channel. The demolition team is confident the work can be completed on Monday.

KYTC District 1 and the demolition contractor are coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard to extend a closure of the river channel.

A lane restriction with alternating flow controlled by an automated signal will remain in place on the New U.S. 60 Cumberland River "Smithland" Bridge until efforts to clear the river channel are completed. The work zone traffic restriction is likely to remain in place through noon on Monday, Dec. 4.

KYTC District 1 will provide additional updates as the demolition work continues.

Two additional blasts are planned at about two-week intervals to take down remnants of the old bridge, including the concrete piers and concrete abutments.

PADUCAH, Ky. (December 1, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans daytime closures along KY 94 in southwestern Fulton County between the City of Hickman and the Kentucky-Tennessee State Line on Monday and Tuesday, December 4 & 5, 2023.

The daytime closures are along KY 94 between mile point 7.47 at the KY 311 intersection, extending northeast to mile point 10.9 at the KY 1099 intersection. The initial work will be immediately west of the Joe Parker Road intersection.

Transportation Cabinet Seeking Input on New Entrance along KY 121-Bypass at Mayfield

Citizens may contact KYTC District 1 or request a public hearing

PADUCAH, Ky. (December 1, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is seeking public input on a permit request to allow a new entrance to be constructed along the KY 121 Dick Castleman Bypass at Mayfield.

The permit request from MIDCO Building Products is to create a new access point to the company's location at 1040 Dick Castleman Bypass.

According to KYTC District 1 Chief Engineer Kyle Poat, the Cabinet is considering the request for construction of a new right-in/right-out only entrance.

”MIDCO is seeking to construct a right-in and right-out only entrance at KY 121-Bypass mile point 6.686,” Poat said. “This is approximately 750 ft. north of the existing MIDCO entrance. It is designed to reduce congestion and enhance safety at the company’s main entrance at the East Douthitt Street intersection.”

The permit (KYTC KEPT #01-2021-00237) would require a break in the existing partially controlled access along the KY 121-Bypass. The new 60 ft. wide entrance would allow SEMI trucks an additional access point to the facility.

Anyone who wishes to seek a public hearing on this permit request may contact Kyle Poat, P.E., at the KYTC District 1 Office, 5501 Kentucky Dam Rd, Paducah, KY 42003, by mail or by calling 270-898-2431 by Dec 28, 2023.

If a public hearing is not requested by Dec. 28, KYTC District 1 will consider issuing the permit without a hearing. Questions should be directed to Kyle Poat at the KYTC District 1 Paducah office.

Old U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge Demolition Follow-Up

As you might imagine, the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management helped coordinate security on the river for the Friday blast that brought down the 92-year-old Smithland Bridge. The Livingston County Rescue Squad had a boat at the edge of the clear zone to monitor the shoreline and river. The crew provided a different view of the blast in the video below.

Thanks to all of the area agencies that helped prepare for the blast.

As a reminder, the New U.S. 60 Cumberland River "Smithland" Bridge continues to be restricted to one lane with alternating flow controlled by an automated signal through Friday afternoon.

The Cumberland River is closed to all boat traffic at the site until 8 p.m., today, or until the removal of steel from the old bridge is removed from the river, and a Coast Guard boat runs a sonar check of the riverbed to ensure all of the truss has been removed from the water.

Demolition Work Continues at Old Smithland Bridge

A demolition crew worked late into the night pulling pieces of the Old U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge out of the river. The truss and several support spans on the old bridge were dropped with an explosive detonation at 9 a.m., Thursday.

The contractor has until 8 p.m., Friday, to clear steel from the riverbed to allow tow boat and pleasure boat traffic to resume. Some sections of the truss are being placed along the shoreline where they can be reached by land-based demolition crews using mechanical equipment.

As work continues in the river, the crews have made good progress cutting up the approach spans that were taken down by explosives.

Once the main truss is removed from the river, a Coast Guard boat will make a sonar sweep of the area to assure all of the steel has been removed form the riverbed.

As the demolition work continues, traffic on the new U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge is restricted to one lane with alternating flow controlled by an automated signal. The lane restriction on the new bridge is expected to remain in place until late Friday afternoon.

Study website to activate Thursday

Cairo, IL. (Nov. 30, 2023) — The second of two public information meetings was held today on behalf of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for the U.S. 60 Connectivity Study. This Planning and Environmental Linkage (PEL) study assess the feasibility of a new U.S. 60 corridor and Ohio River bridge crossing between U.S. 60 at Barlow, Ky., and I-57 near Future City, Il.

The first meeting held at Ballard Memorial High School in Barlow, Ky, on Wednesday, attracted about 300 citizens. Tonight, almost 90 people came to an open house meeting at Cairo High School in Cairo, Il, to talk to members of the study team and provide input on options that are being considered. The same study information was shared at both meetings.

The purpose of the U.S. 60 Connectivity Study is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the benefits and impacts of developing a more direct route between U.S. 60 in western Kentucky and I-57 in southern Illinois. The study examines the environmental, social and economic effects of a potential new corridor. KYTC will use the study findings to determine if they will develop a new U.S. 60 corridor, or the U.S. 51 Bridge Replacement project.

Anyone who was unable to attend one of the two meetings may view displays and materials at the KYTC Paducah office or at US60ConnectivityStudy.com. Public comment forms will be available online starting Friday.

Individuals or organizations who wish to submit comments outside of the public meetings may also contact Kyle Poat, PE, at the KYTC District 1 Office at 5501 Kentucky Dam Road, Paducah, Ky., 42003 or by calling 270-994-1910. Comments will be accepted until Dec. 30. All comments will become part of the official meeting record.
