Many foot problems start due to improper function of the foot during gait. Analyzing how your feet and legs work together when you are walking can provide us insight when designing a treatment plan to make sure you are feeling better all around.

Next up in our National Foot Health Awareness Month posts is a look at heel pain. Did you know that the heel is the largest bone in the foot?

There are many causes of heel pain which include injuries, stress, and soft tissue issues. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, these causes include:

Heel spurs are bony growths on the underside of the heel bone. The spur can extend forward as much as half an inch and can result from strain on the muscles and ligaments of the foot, by stretching of the long band of tissue that connects the heel and the ball of the foot, and by repeated tearing away of the lining or membrane that covers the heel bone.

Both heel pain and heel spurs can be linked with plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the band of fibrous connective tissue, or the fascia, running along the bottom of the foot. It is common among athletes who run and jump often.

Pain at the back of the heel can also be associated with Achilles Tendinitis, inflammation of the Achilles tendon as it runs behind the ankle and inserts on the back surface of the heel bone. It is common among those who run and walk a lot and have tight tendons.

Other possible causes of heel pain include arthritis, bursitis, and bone bruises.

The first signs of injury are swelling and aching. Bones of the feet can be overused and stressed along with the lack of flexibility that can cause ankle, foot, knee and back issues.
