US IRS aims to collect on 125,000 unfiled high-income tax returns — Reuters The Internal Revenue Service said on Thursday it will crack down on high-income earners who have failed to file tax returns in 125,000 cases since 2017, resurrecting a non-filer enforcement program that was idled for years by past budget cuts.

Spokane and San Diego Areas Get Tax Relief - New Tax Filing Deadline for 2023 Tax Returns is June 17, 2024.

The IRS has granted tax relief to individuals and businesses affected by the Aug. 18, 2023, wildfires in the Spokane, Wash., area and the storms and flooding that struck the San Diego area beginning Jan. 21. Affected individual and business taxpayers will now have until June 17 to file their individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.

The IRS offers tax relief to any individuals and households that reside or have business in an area designated as a disaster area by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Currently, these include San Diego County in California and Spokane County in Washington.

IRS Targets High Earners with Compliance Efforts

The IRS announced today it is intensifying efforts to ensure tax compliance among high-income taxpayers who have neglected to file federal income tax returns since 2017. With funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, over 125,000 compliance letters will be sent out, targeting individuals annually earning over $1 million and those earning between $400,000 and $1 million between 2017 and 2021. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel stresses the importance of tax fairness, urging non-filers to promptly rectify their non-compliance to avoid penalties and enforcement measures, with the initiative reflecting a broader IRS push to enhance tax compliance.

Non-filers who receive these letters are advised to consult tax professionals and file their overdue tax returns promptly to mitigate potential penalties and enforcement actions. Failure to respond could lead to escalated IRS enforcement measures, including audits, collection actions and potential criminal prosecution.
