When most people think of the desert, they usually think of the a big saguaro cactus famously represented in a lot of movies and beautiful pictures. But did you know that those only grow in the Sonoran Desert?

Though some can be found growing amongst Joshua trees in different areas, Joshua Tree National Park is located in the Mojave Desert where we actually have no saguaro!

One cactus we do have though, amongst a few others, is the beavertail cactus!

This cactus mostly grows throughout the Mojave, Anza-Borrego, and Colorado Deserts. And during its blooming period, it showcases stunning pink flowers that the wildlife enjoy eating as much as we love photographing them!

This rare time of color and blooms is a time that is so special to see, but very hard to predict! So when you get to see flowering like this on desert plants, consider yourself lucky indeed!

The wildflowers are slowly coming to life after all the recent rain!

Though each area will vary in what blooms they have for a variety of reasons, there are lots of places to see them smattered all throughout the desert floor!

This open road in particular is usually more open than others in the park! One of the hidden gems of Joshua Tree National Park is where we take guests on our off-roading tour in Joshua Tree!

Be warned: this tour is NOT for the faint of heart! It is very bumpy and very rugged, but man is it FUN!

There’s nothing quite like a desert sunset.

They have a unique and special beauty about the colors the sky creates over Joshua Trees and large rock piles.

We’re lucky enough to catch one of these bad boys almost every afternoon tour of our Joshua Tree Driving tour and off-road tour!

The teddy-bear cholla cactus is a famous plant that grows in large groves in Joshua Tree and all throughout the national park!

Their fuzzy looking stems give the look of something warm and appealing to touch, but they are actually anything but!

These guys are determined hitchhikers that can make any passersby an unwitting propagator. Keep in mind that removing the barbs can be painful and difficult, so as pretty as they are to look at, do not touch them!

Though they are painful for humans to mess with, they actually are quite an important part of the desert ecosystem.
They are popular nesting sites for birds, and desert pack-rats use fallen cholla arms to build up their nests to keep out predators.

These iconic plants grow all throughout the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, but one of the biggest collections of them is at the Cholla Cactus Garden in Joshua Tree National Park!

We often take visitors there on our Joshua Tree tours depending on availability!

Don’t let rainy days keep you away!

Please know that we always watch for rain and potential flooding, and would never do a risky tour. So if there’s rain forecasted for your tour date, trust that we’ll only run it if we know to the best of our abilities that it’ll be safe!

The desert is usually quite sunny and dry the majority of the year, so watching it get some much needed moisture is actually really cool!

Being out in the desert wilderness can come with its share of surprises!

Take a couple of days ago on tour when a true desert local decided to camp out and set up shop in the tire of our Jeep!

Luckily the rattlesnake and all involved were safe and unscathed, though I’m sure it wasn’t happy about being moved from its napping spot..

Happy Halloween everyone! 🎃

Did you know that the desert has a spooky legend about the Mojave Bigfoot?

Out here, it is called the Yucca Man!

The lore of the Yucca Man is that it is an 8 foot beast covered head to toe in hair, and has been seen wandering around the Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona desert for a very long time.

The local Native American tribes of the Antelope Valley area have also noted seeing “hairy devils” for hundreds of years throughout the Mojave Desert of Southern California.

As new housing developments were created in the 60s and 70s, the Yucca Man encounters started to rise. People reported finding very large footprints, smelling foul odors, and hearing something scratching on their doors in the middle of the night. Recently in 2012, hikers reported being stalked by a big hairy beast in the canyons they were hiking in.

So is it fact? Is it fiction? We may never know, but we do know this: be wary when traveling in the desert, especially at night.
