Fun fact: only about five percent of the wine produced in Châteauneuf du Pape annually is white wine. We think that’s crazy, because the wine that does get made is really special! They are typically lush, complex, richly fruited and with enough brightness to age very well. On this rainy Saturday, our thoughts turn to the farmers of and their families.

Already faced with an April frost event only last week, on Wednesday an intense hail storm devastated large swaths of Chablis vineyards. At times like this we are reminded that fickle Mother Nature provides, and she also taketh away. Many of these growers will be bringing in a fraction of the crop they anticipated at the outset of the season. Families and local businesses will share the catastrophic burden of losing so much of very valuable cash crop.

If you have the opportunity to do so this year, visit the region. Spend money at their hotels and restaurants. Buy their wines. Treasure each sip, because fine wine is never a sure thing. 🥀

From our “wines you’ve never heard of” series: Rousette (Altesse) de Bugey

Bugey is in a bit of no-man’s land of French vineyards; often associated with Savoie due to proximity, but in a different département than Savoie, and historically affiliated with Burgundy.

This beautiful white wine from the Altesse grape is somehow both linear and broad 🤔 “with a nose of chamomile, hay and yellow apple skin. Airy, lush texture with wispy floral notes woven with lacy minerals. Beautiful, persistent and complex.” — LR
