Then, fear of a new tumor developing near his hypothalamus triggered worry that Lewis would develop hypothalamic obesity. It was time to operate.

For the last 30+ years, Dr. Gary Steinberg & the Stanford Moyamoya Center team have treated moyamoya patients & been heroes to many.

We're humbled to share a message to the moyamoya community this 10th annual World Moyamoya Day - May 6th from Dr. Gary Steinberg. Here is what he had to share...

"Today, on the 10th anniversary of World Moyamoya Day, we have much to celebrate. Ever since Tara MacInnes received her bypass surgery in 2004, nearly twenty years ago, I have seen her advocate tirelessly to spread awareness about this rare and often overlooked disease. I am glad to connect with the moyamoya community on this significant anniversary of World Moyamoya Day and reflect on all that has been accomplished.

I also want to recognize the leadership team of World Moyamoya Day, including DJ Johnson, (founder of Moyamoya.com), Angie Sucher Gabrielson, Jennifer Carlin Reilly, Raja Sonnylal and Leila Booshehri Gallagher for their outstanding promotion and leadership. It is through all of your team efforts that
patients are able to pursue further knowledge and support for moyamoya patients and families worldwide.

At Stanford, we continue to have excellent outcomes for our moyamoya patients who come here for treatment and surgery. With more than 31 years of moyamoya treatment expertise, and having performed more than 2,000 surgeries in over 1,300 patients from 49 states and 19 countries, Stanford’s Moyamoya Center continues to offer the most comprehensive approach to treating moyamoya patients. Currently performing 100-120 moyamoya revascularization procedures a year, we are privileged to remain the largest moyamoya referral center in the US and Western world.

We are fortunate to have made some significant research advances in the past 2 years, that clarify some important issues facing moyamoya patients. I am often asked whether a direct bypass procedure is riskier than an indirect bypass in adult moyamoya patients, so we studied this in 133 direct compared with 62 indirect bypasses and showed no difference in the very low post-op stroke rate, but better revascularization at 6 months in the direct bypass group. We also demonstrated that contrary to prior smaller series suggesting 30% of patients with unilateral moyamoya progress to bilateral disease, only 8% of our 217 unilateral patients progressed to involve the other side – which is very reassuring for these patients. Another key study in our pregnant moyamoya patients revealed that performing bypass before pregnancy protected against all strokes during pregnancy or in the postpartum period, compared to a much higher risk of stroke and TIAs in patients who became pregnant before undergoing bypass. Using blood, cerebrospinal fluid and small specimens of arteries from surgery, generously donated by our patients, we have now found novel secreted factors and differences in moyamoya patient blood vessel cells that help explain the disease. Finally, using sophisticated brain imaging we identified several modifiable preoperative factors that increase the risk of postoperative stroke in moyamoya patients, allowing us to decrease surgical risks in our patients.

To all moyamoya patients and their families – thank you for sharing your experience, championing understanding and early treatment, providing resources and knowledge to others, and for being such a dedicated community. I am grateful for all the important work you have accomplished in raising awareness about this under recognized and often misdiagnosed disease among the public and
healthcare professionals. Going forward, I and my colleagues will continue to help patients navigate their moyamoya journey with research discoveries to identify causes of moyamoya and avenues for best treatment options.

Wishing good health to all our Moyamoya Warriors,

Dr. Gary Steinberg
