We are excited to announce that we are one month away from the Day of Service with Greystar at HomeFirst! This project began in 2023 when HIF champions added privacy screens to 200+ client beds and installed walls to create a visual barrier between the shelter’s bathrooms and sleeping area.
Phase two begins on 8/22 at the Boccardo Reception Center, and we can’t wait to get started! This phase will involve painting the sleeping area and cafeteria, a full renovation of the main lobby, intake offices, and welcome desks. The project will include new flooring, furniture, lighting, and a new bathroom for clients! Varsity Painting is donating paint and supplies and will be prepping the shelter for the volunteers.
Stay tuned for more updates! Thank you again to our Corporate Champion, and our vendors , , , and Commercial Fire Protection! Please enjoy the before and proposed after photos!
In the 1st half of 2024, we placed 7 new families and received $360,076 in in-kind rental donations from our partners. Thanks to Richard, Albert and Leah for great evening at the ballpark!
Let's continue to explore the impact of our Emergency Housing Fund program through the story of Sandra.
Sandra and her son arrived in the Bay Area five years ago. During those 5 years, she diligently supported herself and her son. However, when her second child arrived prematurely at 35 weeks, their medical journey added unexpected strain.
With her work hours reduced and income dwindling, Sandra found herself teetering on the edge financially. Though she stretched her resources, relying on savings and the generosity of her son’s school for groceries, the weight of rent loomed large.
In her moment of need, Sandra turned to St. Vincent de Paul, a trusted partner agency of HIF. Through collaboration, HIF extended a lifeline, ensuring Sandra and her children remained securely housed with a timely grant for rental assistance.
"I have so much gratitude for your organization. I am a single mom. I had a difficult pregnancy and could not work enough to cover the rent and other bills. Thanks to HIF, I am back and ready to get my life in order. With your help I have been able to keep my apartment and have peace of mind knowing that I have a home for me and my kids. Many thanks. GOD BLESS YOU.”

For over ten years, Fashion Furniture Rental has supported HIF through our events and Renovation Program. They have helped us to provide much needed stylish and functional pieces for domestic violence shelters, transitional homes and agencies throughout the Bay Area.
Fashion Furniture has always focused on ‘serving customers differently than other furniture rental companies: providing personalized service and creating a feeling of home for customers no matter how long their stay, no matter where they stayed.’
It is from this lens that the team at Fashion Furniture have imbued our projects and the agencies we serve with not only quality furniture, but also functionality while injecting the spaces we transform with warmth and making them not just a place to recover and move on, but a home.
With over $77,000 donated to HIF (at least $25,000 of it from in-kind donations), the team at Fashion Furniture have been critically important to the success of our Program, particularly in 2023-24.
As important as their support has been to HIF, it is the spirit of collaboration and genuine desire to help that is at the core of what makes HIF and our Renovation Program successful!
"At Fashion Furniture, community is at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we proudly support HIF and their mission to give back. We know that when we work together to uplift and empower our community, that is when we make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around us.”
Cat Lake, Corporate Accounts Manager
As important as their support has been to HIF, it is the spirit of collaboration and genuine desire to help that is at the core of what makes HIF and our Renovation Program go!

For over 20 years ProFloors has been a vital part of our Renovation Program, providing over $100,000 of in-kind donated services and materials. They have also supported our events and are currently a key part of our Trades Cohort for our Major Gifts Campaign, making a three year pledge to help achieve our fundraising goals. Their commitment to our mission and serving our communities through the highest quality service and outcomes for shelters and agencies has helped to make our Renovation Program unique within the nonprofit sector in the Bay Area.
We have been a part of, and have supported, HIF for over 20 years because they truly make a difference in the lives of the families and people they serve. We are proud to support HIF and the Renovation Program. I’ve seen so many families get the chance to turn their lives around through the programs and staff at HIF. ”
Rick Curbelo, CEO & President, ProFloors
The ProFloors team has also exuded the kind of can-do, ‘how can we help’ spirit that reflects their company culture and the spirit of the HIF family. They put the same level of professionalism and quality into our Renovation Program projects as they would any job, and the results speak for themselves.
The shelters that we renovate frequently have high-impact usage and the floors are often the last aspect of a shelter or transitional home that can be renovated correctly and made to last. When the ProFloors team finishes an HIF project, the results are transformative for the nonprofit and the clients they serve.
Since we discussed the EHF program in our last post, let's discuss the Q1 performance of our Affordable Housing Initiative.
Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI) clients are teachers and school staff, healthcare workers, and nonprofit professionals who we match with apartments at up to 50% below market rates for up to three years and located within a 30-minute commute to their jobs.
In the first quarter of 2024:
We had 49 active households, serving 62 adults and 30 children. We received $163,590 in rental donations from our partners. On average, each AHI participant had $1,112 in rental savings.
48% of participants are in education services, 40% in nonprofit/social services, 6% in county services, 4% healthcare, and 2% in other.
Since 2019:
AHI has served 111 households and received $2,332,962 in in-kind rental donations from our partners.
Thank you to our AHI partners! Now that we're into our second Quarter, let's talk about the results of the Emergency Housing Program in our first!
Our housing grants of up to $2,500 help people pay rent, security deposits, and utility bills. Many Emergency Housing Fund (EHF) clients encountered an unexpected setback, have exhausted all other aid options, and are on the brink of becoming unhoused.
In Q1 of 2024, these grants helped 255 people in 146 households, of which 31% were children. The average grant was $1,392. In total this past quarter, we distributed $203,350 to help people in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties avert a crisis.
