This is the son of one of my dearest friends. He is a talented musician and high school teacher. When I first saw him standing there, holding his bugle, I had to fight back tears ….mostly because of the gesture that this young man will play taps for his grandfather’s funeral. Such poignant beauty in that. Also, as any one who grew up on a military base, as my friend and I did, the sound of taps is deeply stirring. Our fathers ultimately came home–we were lucky– and lived long meaningful lives with their children and grandchildren. However, as all of us are reminded on Memorial Day, far too many do not. God bless all military service men and women and their families for all of their sacrifices, for we are free because of you.
