Our Vision: Health planet, healthy food - for all. climate change, gardening, healthy soil, community science, Los Angeles
Planet Earth Observatory combats climate change through citizen science initiatives in urban food gardens to tend ecosystems, observe nature and advocate for food justice.
Congratulations to the Huntington Ranch whose fava beans are the first to arrive among the five gardens participating in our Community Science Healthy Soils Investigation featuring...you guessed it: a cover crop of FAVA BEANS! Stay tuned for the grand arrival of favas at our other participating locations.
Please support our efforts to fight climate change in local food gardens! We aren't letting Covid-19 defeat us. We are starting our third year of a healthy soils experiment, partnering with Biddy Mason Girl Scout Troop #4601 who will run the investigation in a front yard neighborhood demonstration project in Pasadena, CA. Read here for more info on our other partners - and donate. Our Healthy Soils investigation began in 2018 with a small start up grant from NOAA's Planet Stewards. We are "Soil Builders" working together to mitigate the effects of climate change in edible food gardens around Los Angeles. Our goal is to "grow" healthy soil that will increase nutrients, save water, increase crop yield. Our experiment involves growing a cover crop of fava beans under varying conditions followed by a crop of corn. Cover crops are one of several healthy soils practices advocated by California's Healthy Soils Initiative. Others include the use of compost, mulch, no till, crop rotation and native plants as habitats for pollinators.
