POV: Parent Education
We are all teachers and we are all learners.
The parent ed potluck is an opportunity for parents and teachers to gather outside of class to share and learn from one another.
Slowing down to try new things
Cottage is a place for kids to slow down and try things for themselves. Adults observe and support these important opportunities for confidence to grow. Kids are learning how to use their bodies and need the space to test things out.
It’s coffee time!☕️
Cottage’s annual fundraiser with Jones Coffee Roasters is officially brewing! We’d appreciate it a latte if you’d consider donating to support our wonderful school. For every donation of $25, you’ll receive a custom roasted bag of Jones coffee. See link in bio. 🫶
Excitement around finding a baby lizard in the yard. Everyone wanted a peek. The hardest part of the day was having to say goodbye and send the little lizard home!
Smoothie week!
Not only we’re they tasty, but the kids learned so much from the experience! Like taking turning, pouring and cutting, waiting patiently and tolerating loud noises!
Have you ever used the goodbye window?!
Teacher Wallace introduced the idea to someone who was having a hard time saying goodbye today! It’s so much easier to wave bye bye when it’s made fun! A few friends even came over to see what all the excitement was as about. ☺️
Get down on their level
Anytime we engage with kids, but especially in a moment of crisis, it’s important that we lower our bodies down to kid height so we can interact face to face. The feeling of a powerful authority towering over a child increases feelings of distress and adds to being upset. By lowering ourselves we can increase the feeling of safety.

Cottage Co-Op Nursery School
Founded in 1972, Cottage Co-Op Nursery School is a very special place. At Cottage Co-op, we teach children that their ideas and interests are worth pursuing. We foster creativity, expression, ingenuity, and love of learning through a play-based curriculum that evolves from a child’s interests and expands upon his or her exploration.
The school focuses on the "whole child" where social, emotional, physical and intellectual development are equally nurtured and empathy is foundational. We strive to celebrate and accept each child’s unique abilities and interests.
Cottage kids range between 2 and 5 years old. Mulberry class is for kiddos age 2 to 2 years six months at the beginning of the school year; children 2 years 6 months to 3 years old enter Olive class; Oak class is for 3 and 4 year olds; and Rainforest class is where our 4 and five year olds explore. We spend a lot of time outdoors and emphasize the importance of play. We have small class sizes with a low adult-to-child ratio, enabling the kids to lead their own explorations and learning in a truly child-led manner.
At Cottage, children, parents and teachers all grow through the experiences we share. Our very nature as a "co-op" means that we believe that our families should play an integral role both in their children's education and in the school as a whole. Besides periodically working a shift as “Snack Parent” or “Yard Parent” within our children's classrooms (usually 1-2 times per month) each Cottage family takes part in a service committee to support the school in various ways. The benefits, opportunities and responsibilities of working in a cooperative environment are truly rewarding. Cottage families become part of a progressive, like-minded community dedicated to making Cottage a wonderful place to be a kid...and a parent.
