"I always knew from that moment, from the time I found myself at home in that little segregated library in the South, all the way up until I walked up the steps of the New York City library, I always felt, in any town, if I can get to a library, I'll be OK. It really helped me as a child, and that never left me." - Maya Angelou

March 1 - Hubbard Library Celebrates Women’s History Month at Fuller - In 1947, when Fuller Theological Seminary was founded, it was assumed that all students preparing for ministry would be men; women, however, saw it differently. At their insistence, by the following year women were taking individual courses, and by 1950 a degree specifically for women—the Bachelor of Sacred Theology, a modified version of the Bachelor of Divinity—was created, with Helen Clark its first graduate in 1952 (pictured below). That year also saw the hiring of Fuller’s first faculty member, Rebecca Price, who taught and administered a second degree designed with women in mind, the Master of Religious Education. By 1966, all Fuller’s degree programs were opened to women. With the 1970s came the creation of an Office of Women’s Concerns, courses on women in ministry initiated and taught by Roberta Hestenes, and Fuller’s first female tenure-track faculty member, Hendrika Vande Kemp. “We made it clear that women are welcome, and they showed up,” said trustee Max De Pree about that time more than 40 years ago. “If you were a woman and you felt called to ministry, you could go to Fuller.” For decades now, Fuller has welcomed women equally into all its programs. https://www.fuller.edu/womeninministry/

This Day in History series - February 19-22, 2014 - Fuller’s School of Psychology celebrated 50 years during its 2014 Integration Symposium. The School has been driven by a pioneering spirit and commitment to excellence in integration, research, and clinical training. The vision of integrating theology and psychology which John Finch introduced in his lectures (1961) became a reality in September 1965, when the School of Psychology held its first classes. In 1972, the American Psychological Association (APA) granted approval to the school’s doctoral program in clinical psychology, making Fuller the first seminary to receive APA accreditation.

The school continued to expand by adding new research programs, clinics, outreach programs through the 1960s-1980s. Academic programs (Marriage and Family Therapy program) and degrees (Doctoral program) were added to the school in 1987. In the 1987-1988 academic school year, the Lee Edward Travis Research Institute for Biopsychosocial Research was founded. It provided the setting and support for faculty and students to collaborate in groundbreaking research in a range of areas: religion and psychotherapy, stress, trauma, and adjustment; neuropsychology; child and adolescent development. In 2020, the school was renamed School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy.
