Under 5 seconds.
It takes under five seconds to change someone’s life forever. “You cannot go crazy because you are strong, and strong people don’t just go crazy.” Is it true? Probably not. Anyone can loose their marbles (or s**t) when pushed too much, but that is what I needed to hear in the summer break of my first year of med school, and my middle school social studies teacher (who was also my home room teacher) said that to me.
When I decide to be a teacher I made a decision to always say “the right thing” my students needed to hear, always build up, always try to make them dream big, but also do my best to be realistic. Not everyone will get to Stanford. For some of them, just getting out of the abuse cycle is an amazing step up. And yes, one of my students got into Stanford because she took my advice to apply.
As about me, I am not different than anyone else. I still need magic words or realistic reminders to move forward. I also need a chef, a driver, a cleaning person and a personal assistant 😌 oh and about eight more hours in a day.
